Purple Class Topic Overview – Spring 1
Title: ‘To infinity and beyond!’ Timescale: 5 Weeks
Rationale:
The children have asked to learn about a whole host of different things, however, the main theme to emerge was to learn about space, our world and evolution. Therefore, we will begin the term with a hook of watching video clips from Tim Peak and also with a piece of ‘space rock’ landing on our decking after all the storms! This will, I hope lead to lots of questions about the universe beyond our planet, how it was formed and the similarities and differences between planets. To mark 100 years since the first women got the vote we will also learn about the first Britain to go to space in 1991 and that it was a woman; Helen Sharman!
Another interest that is recurring is that of animals; mainly horses and unicorns but also zoo animals, when we come to look at life on different planets we will look in more detail about the different creatures that live on earth, thinking about categorising in different ways. Some of the children also wanted to learn about ninjas, our bodies and ballerinas so we will think about ourselves in detail and also keeping fit and healthy with different exercises such as ballet and also martial arts for ninjas!
We will incorporate festivals such as Chinese New Year and dates in the Christian calendar to continue to talk about diversity and different cultures. At this time of year we join together with Little Stars to learn about Chinese New Year in detail and to celebrate with parents; more information about this to follow. We hope the children will be enthused by this learning and that further questions will arise from the activities.
The Big Questions: Looking at similarities and differences. Hook: Space rock Take-Away Task: Children to create their own planet to bring in to show the How and why things happen. and clips from Tim other children in the class (more information to follow). Peak.
