POSITION: K-12 Band/Choir Teacher

LOCATION: Elementary, Middle, and High School

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

Washington State Teaching Certificate with K-12 Music, Instrumental Music, and/or Choral Music endorsements; Bachelor’s Degree with major or minor in music; Ability to play at least one standard instrument and ability to sing; Must meet Highly Qualified requirements.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

 Conducting a choral and instrumental education program.  Supervises classroom aides, or volunteers involved in the music program.  Conducting music classes and rehearsals as provided in the schedule of classes.  Selecting music, materials, and equipment and recommending purchases for the music program.  Planning, organizing, rehearsing, and presenting music programs and public concerts as deemed reasonable.  Providing for Pep band performance at athletic contests as deemed reasonable.  Attendance and performance of music students at special events such as contests, clinics, celebrations, parades, and tournaments.  Selecting, purchasing, and presentation of music awards to students as deemed reasonable.  Supervising any fund raising undertaken by music groups.  Disbursement of ASB music funds.  Care and inventory of music, school musical instruments, uniforms, and other equipment.  Perform any other reasonable duties that the supervisor may request.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Essential Duties:

 Plans and teaches a balanced music program, and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.  Uses appropriate materials, technology and resources to help meet learning needs of all students.  Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.  Provides appropriate instruction and modifications for students with special needs, including special education students and students who have limited proficiency in English.  Evaluates each pupil’s musical growth and performance, assessing each individual’s contribution to the performance of the group.  Collaborates with students, parents, school staff and other appropriate persons to assist in meeting student needs.  Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, rehearsals, and music performances.  Plans, rehearses, and directs pupils in musical programs for school and community to include a minimum of two concerts per school year, winter and spring. Applies knowledge of national, state and district procedures and limitations set on performances.  Promotes, develops and coordinates elementary music performances with the elementary teachers.  Maintains the band and music room(s) as safe, attractive, interesting, and positive learning environments.  Selects and requisitions music, books, musical instruments, and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.  Controls the storage and use of school-owned property; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.  Manages a check-out/in system of instruments, equipment and music as needed and maintains accurate inventory records.  Promotes, organizes, directs and supervises pep band performances for all home football and basketball games held on Fridays and Saturdays as well as post season play-offs and tournament games (home and away) as required.  Organizes, rehearses and directs a marching band(s) for area parades.  Cooperates with school administration in providing musical programs for school productions, graduation ceremonies, and civic functions  Participates in Bi-County Honor Band and Choir performances.  Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.  Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.  Performs other duties as may, from time to time, be assigned by the supervisor.

Other Duties:

 Maintains professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings and other professional activities.  Participates in various student and parent activities which occur in school including PTO, student clubs and after- school activities.  Creates an effective learning environment through student recruitment, dynamic learning opportunities, and student relationships.  Performs other duties as assigned by principal or appropriate administrator.

Supervisory Responsibilities: May include instructional assistants, volunteers, tutors. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary is determined by the state salary schedule.
