WALWORTH SOCIETY MEETING 7pm – 4 December 2014: Pembroke House, Walworth, SE17.
ITEM COMMENTS WELCOME & Jeremy welcomed everyone to the meeting and thanks Pembroke INTRODUCTIONS. House for allowing us to hold the meeting in their hall. Follow up to WS meeting of 6 November 2014: MD & JL are preparing an initial response from the Walworth Society to the draft of the New Southwark Plan. 1. Walworth Credit Cllr EK gave an update on the proposed day of action for Saturday Union 13th December, aimed at promoting credit unions rather than payday loans. Please meet at Liverpool Grove, 11am by the gates of St Peter’s Church. Cllr EK will draft text for a leaflet and share with JL/PS & AMM. Ideas included handing out gold coins and possibly having a Father Christmas.
There has been a lot of support from London Mutual and a commitment to opening a branch in Walworth if the right property can be found. They have a meeting planned with Fiona Colley (Council Head of Resources) to discuss the issue.
Rev PS mentioned the changing policy on payday loans and expressed concern over taking a negative stance on the loan shops and suggested it was more important to promote the Credit Union alternative. 2. The People’s Eva Sajovic & Rebecca Davies presented to the group on a local arts Bureau project called The People’s Bureau. This will include a skills exchange focused on a market stall/cart at the E&C shopping centre. JW mentioned similarities with the time banking concept and projects he had seen in Liverpool. JL to pass on details to ES. 3. Walworth Road JL mentioned DC’s history research on the Walworth Road and the History Day associated Walworth Road History Day event, which will be held on 6th June 2015. JW is leading this project and will run a working group, initially to include JW, DC, PS, SF, TE, PW. JL will proceed with seeking a road closure order for Liverpool Grove. JL also mentioned the NSET fund for some potential additional funding.
1 4. Walworth Road DC gave an update on progress with preparing the historic area Conservation assessment for the Walworth Road. Cllr TE suggested potentially Area seeking support/endorsements for the draft from other groups before submitting it to the Council.
5. E&C / Walworth JL mentioned the community asset workshop on Saturday 6th Neighbourhood December 10:00-16:00. Please meet from 10:00 at Henry Wood Hall, Plan Trinity Church Square, SE1 4UH for the introduction followed by a walking tour of the area. Reassemble at 13:00 at Jack Hobbs Centre, Maddock Way, Brandon Estate, Kennington, SE17 3NH for lunch (free) and an interactive workshop.
6. TFL TFL are running a consultation on the proposals for the new Square at Consultation the northern roundabout at E&C. Further details online at: Elephant Square https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/roads/elephant TE suggested JL should contact Cllr Mark Williams at Southwark Council to ask about the plans for the David Bratby murals which currently animate a number of the subways. Suggested as a minimum a high quality photographic record should be taken. 7. Projects Update Manor Place Depot: NHHT are preparing another consultation event for early/mid January which is likely to be the last one prior to submitting a planning application. DC, MD & JL have been submitting comments on design. NL mentioned that questions still remain over affordable housing commitments.
Manor Place Terrace: Feasibility study is expected to go to Cabinet in February. We still understand the intention is for a Council led development which will retain the façade and deliver public realm improvements.
SC asked about the latest status of the Chatelaine House development. The Council’s website suggests this has still not been determined.
Discussions were held about the future of the Coronet at the E&C. MD mentioned that the application for listing had not yet been determined. 8. AOB Rev PS mentioned a planning app has been submitted for Crossways Church and can be viewed online. SC mentioned the Bishop’s House by Kennington Park and questioned whether a visit could be arranged. Date of next meeting: 7pm, Thurs 8 January 2015. Location TBC
