Students will use math in almost every unit of study. Students will not only study the concepts but will also have a chance to complete hands on experiments and to watch demonstrations as well.
Grading Policies: 1. Tests (45%): Over the course of the marking period, there will be 2 or 3 chapter tests. 100 points each
2. Quizzes (20%): Quizzes may be announced or unannounced. You should expect one or two quizzes each week. 50 points for announced quizzes, which may be retaken prior to the chapter test if the student earns less than a 75%. 20 points for unannounced quizzes (Pop-quizzes) – Cannot retake! 20 points for notebook quizzes (open-notebook/closed-textbook). These quizzes will be used to evaluate homework and class work each week. They will be given at the end of each week and cannot be retaken.
3. Homework and Class work (10%): Homework will be essential for understanding the material presented in class and the material found on quizzes and tests. Daily homework is checked for completion and will not be acceptable if not present at the time checked.
4. Laboratory Assignments (25%): Laboratory assignments will consist of formal laboratory reports and/or lab packets. There will be one formal report each quarter which will be discussed in detail when it is applicable. There is a 10% reduction for late assignments due for lab and the assignment must be turned in within 5 school days of the deadline. When a student is absent for lab, he or she will need to see the instructor to arrange an acceptable make-up date.
5. Projects and student research: The topics will relate to current issues and research related to chemistry. These will count as a test grade.
6. Final Exam: At the end of the year a final exam will be given. This exam is comprehensive; all material discussed throughout the year will be included, i.e. Labs, notes, quizzes. Accelerated Chemistry
Makeup work/Missing work: It is the student’s responsibility to get the work that was missed while absent and to make it up. Refer to the Pathfinder for school make-up policies. See instructor before or after school for make-up assignments. No grade below a 50% will be given for any assignment that is completed by the student.
