Clarissa Tong Takaoka Kogei SHS Descriptions Who Is It? (Drawing activity!)

Target Audience: 3rd year high school students (but could be used in any grade if they already studied body parts, shopping, and descriptive vocabulary).

Objective: Students will practice how to describe people and characters, using vocabulary on physical features, body parts, and clothes.

Materials: Flashcards, blank pieces of paper, and drawing materials.

Procedure: Warm-up: - Have the students review vocabulary words by having the JTE (10 minutes) and ALT describe each other’s appearance and clothes in front of the class as an example.

- Pair students with the person sitting next to them and have them practice describing each other’s appearance.

- Write down some descriptive vocabulary words on the board that students can use for later reference during the main activity.

Main activity: - Divide the students into pairs (30 minutes) - Give student A a flashcard with the name and picture of a famous person or character (i.e., Spongebob, Mickey Mouse, Michael Jackson, Obama, Doraemon, Santa Claus, etc.). Give student B a small blank sheet of paper. Have student A describe the character/person on his/her card and student B will draw the character/person based on student A’s descriptions and guess who it is. Students A and B are not allowed to show each other their card and paper while student B is guessing. Once student B is able to guess the character/person, they can reveal their drawing and compare the drawing to the picture on the flashcards.

- Give student B new flashcards and have student A draw and guess.

Concluding - Have students volunteer to show their drawings to the class and activity: see if the rest of the class can guess who their character is. The (10 minutes) remaining free time can be used for students to share their drawings with each other.

Additional Information: My students really enjoy drawing so this is a fun lesson if your students do too. I was inspired by the “Post-It Note On Your Forehead” guessing game (as seen in an episode of “The Office”) but adapted it to a drawing activity for my students.
