You can now image the daily life of the four main members of Europe’s feudal society, the nobles—the wealthy privileged class, the knights—loyal soldiers for hire, the god-serving clergy, and poverty-stricken peasants and serfs. As you recall how feudalism’s vicious imbalance of power, you might feel disgusted with the whole notion of this social system. While this social structure is cruel and unfair to most people, its duration of 300 years is a testament to its effectiveness. People were willing to sacrifice personal freedoms and lifestyle choices for their family’s security.

The feudal hierarchy alleviated the peasants’ fear that ruthless, barbarian-led slaughters would ruin their towns. Through the feudal system, the idea of chivalry and service fostered strong family ties that still exist today. While modern society may judge the people of the feudal social structure as weak for not breaking the system sooner, we will never fear for our lives the way Europe’s peasants did in the

Middle Ages. We don’t worry that a vicious, murderous band of thieves will come to destroy our only livelihood. Throughout time, people have always done (and still do) what they must to live a life that will provide them life’s basic necessities: food, shelter, water and security.
