Backward Design -- At the end of the stated time, students will be able to: Literature---( 4 1/2 weeks Anglo-Saxon through Medieval Periods includes fiction/poetry/non-fiction) Compare/contrast development of Brit lit in historic context (12.4a) Recognize major lit forms and their elements (12.4b) Recognize characteristics of major eras (12.4c) Relate lit works/authors to major themes/issues of eras (12.4d) Analyze social/cultural function of Brit lit (12.4e) Explain how poem’s sound (rhyme/repetition/allit./etc. supports subject/mood/theme (12.4f) Identify meaning of idioms, allusions, etc. in text (12.3d) Vocabulary – (4 ½ weeks/4 units) WIDA Expand mature, specific vocabulary. Explore roots/suffixes/prefixes to expand understanding of unfamiliar words. Denotation and connotation; interpret connotation (12.3c) For WIDA students – additional focus on literary elements and standardized testingterms Narrative Writing – (4 ½ weeks) Produce arguments that develop thesis that demonstrates informed judgments, addresses counter claims, and provides effective conclusions. (12.6b) Clarify/defend position with precise, relevant evidence (12.6c) Adapt content/vocab/voice/tone to audience/purpose (12.6d) Revise writing for clarity of content, depth, and technique of presentation (12.6g) Apply grammatical conventions to editing for language/spelling/punctuation/capitalization (12.7b)

English 12 Classes Mon. Objectives: (1) (CRISS) Review of yesterday; plan for today; point out homework on board; We (2) Writing Warm-up: While teacher takes attendance, students will build/reinforce writing skills through journal continue on writing in response to written prompt on board (SOL 12.6); the Jayem- (3) Literature -- The Time Machine – Students will take a quiz on chapters 5-8. Discussion follows re events of AM bell rising action. What complications have emerged? Explore characterization of the races of the future (SOL 12.3, schedule 12.4). (4) Vocab: Power point intro to Vocab Unit 7 words. Students complete Ex. 2 /pgs 82-83. Sharing (SOL 12.3); *** 3rd Period will be introduced to words of the week: SUBSTANTIAL and CATEGORY (5) Literature – Middle Ages – FINISH Students will read medieval romance “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” pgs 230-243– complete an evaluation sheet AFTER reading. Summary discussion will review elements of legend/romance seen in the piece. Discuss themes. How is the medieval hero Sir Gawain different from the Anglo- Saxon hero like Beowulf? What caused this change? (SOL 12.3, 12.4, 12.6, 12.1) (6) CLOSURE

Afterward, summary discussion will review elements of legend/romance seen in the piece. Discuss themes. How do various knights in this tale exhibit flawed natures? Who must atone and do penance at the end of the novel, and for what? Compare tone to that of “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight”. (SOL 12.3, 12.4, 12.6, 12.1) (6) CLOSURE

THEN TURN IN JOURNALS. 3 rd PERIOD STUDENTS WILL INSTEAD DO THE “DROP EVERYTHING AND WRITE” ACTIVITY USING THIS WEEK’S WORDS (SOL 12.6); (3) Vocab Unit 7: Students will take a QUIZ on Unit 7 following review (SOL 12.3); (4) Literature: Students will watch a video of The Time Machine, to assist with understanding of the plot and characterization (SOL 12.4)
