Fraga ABSTRACT: We present an annotated catalogue of the vascular flora of the upper Santa Ana River watershed, in the southern San Bernardino Mountains, in southern California. The catalogue is based on a floristic study, undertaken from 2008 to 2010. Approximately 65 team days were spent in the field and over 5,000 collections were made over the course of the study. The study area is ca. 155 km2 in area (40,000 ac) and ranges in elevation from 1402 m to 3033 m. The study area is botanically diverse with more than 750 taxa documented, including 56 taxa of conservation concern and 81 non-native taxa. Vegetation and habitat types in the area include chaparral, evergreen oak forest and woodland, riparian forest, coniferous forest, montane meadow, and pebble plain habitats. -

Kalmiopsis Journal of the Native Plant Society of Oregon Yellow Cats Ear (Calochortus monophyllus) ISSN 1055-419X Volume 15, 2008 EDITORIAL Kalmiopsis Long-time readers of Kalmiopsis will notice that this is the Journal of the Native Plant Society of Oregon, ©2008 second appearance of Calochortus monophyllus on the cover. The first time was in 1993, shortly after Frank Callahan discovered it on Grizzly Peak. After leading field trips and diligently cataloging Editor the plants of Grizzly Peak for eleven years, Jim Duncan is the local expert for our Oregon Plants and Places feature. For the Cindy Roche, PhD Plant of the Year, Frank Lang helped me uncover the mysteries surrounding green-flowered wild ginger (Asarum wagneri), which was named for Dr.Warren (Herb) Wagner who, in his long career Editorial Board as professor of botany at the University of Michigan, influenced many students. Herb Wagner’s discoveries of Botrychium in the Frank A. Lang, PhD Wallowa Mountains are described in the article on fern diversity Susan Kephart, PhD in the Wallowa Mountains (explained A to Z) by Ed Alverson Rhoda M. Love, PhD and Peter Zika. These two have devoted many weeks to exploring this rugged terrain of northeastern Oregon, and describe how the substrates are keys to habitat. The Plant Hunters article tells the story of Thomas Jefferson Howell, who without education, NPSO Web Page financial backing, or academic resources, wrote the first flora of the Pacific Northwest, an admirable feat of perseverance. Proving http://www.NPSOregon.org that botanical discoveries are still possible, Frank Callahan shares the story of Hinds walnut, a native tree visible from Interstate 5 that, to date, has not been recognized in Oregon by a published flora. -

Vascular Plant List for Ike Kinswa State Park A total of 207 vascular plant species were identified during the 2006 surveys at Ike Kinswa State Park. Of these, 73 of the plant species are non-native, accounting for 35% of the total. Mesler, Graduate Coordinator Date Jená Burges, Vice Provost Date ABSTRACT Floristic studies are especially timely since habitat loss is increasing dramatically. From the conservation perspective, it is imperative to document the distribution of plant species in areas that are floristically rich. For this study, I conducted a floristic survey along a 20-mile transect in the Horse Mountain, Grouse Mountain and Board Camp Mountain areas of Humboldt County, California. I also determined the phytogeographical affinities of the taxa I found and made comparisons between my flora and 11 other northwest California floras. Additionally, I made a comparison between my flora and the historical collection of Joseph Prince Tracy, a botanist who collected extensively in the same area during the early 1900s. I used an informal stratified sampling regime to cover the different vegetation types within the study area. Five hundred and forty-eight species were identified from 77 vascular plant families, including 18 California Native Plant Society listed taxa and 28 taxa endemic to northwest California. -
