Cyrano’s Café & Wine Bar 603 East Lockwood Webster Groves, MO 63119 (314) 963-3232 http://cyranos.com BUSINESS MEETING MINUTES 1) Meeting called to order at 7:45PM (via attendance sign-in sheet) (Michael O’Brien) 2) Welcome/Opening Comments (Michael O’Brien) 3) Membership voted to suspend the “Robert’s Rules of Order” requirement for this meeting (Michael O’Brien) 4) Membership voted to waive the “Order of Business” outlined in Bylaws (Michael O’Brien) 5) Secretary Report (Lance Dauw) a. There were no comments by the membership regarding the minutes from the June meeting. Members can visit the website for the minutes from the previous meeting. b. There were no first Readings of applications for membership c. Second Readings of applications for membership (applications available upon request): 1. Allied: Foster’s, Inc., (Contact: Michael O’Brien) (Wholesale Distributor) Waterloo, IA 2. Active: Camrissa Landscape Design and Construction, LLC, (Contact: Donald Blackford), (Landscape Designer, Construction Services, and Care Services; Horticultural Consultant), St. Louis, MO 3. Associate: Susan Pang, (Landscape Designer; Public Horticulture; Non-Profit Services), St. Louis, MO d. Membership voted to accept the Second Reading Applicants as members. 6) Program Committee (Michael O’Brien) a. See “Next Meeting” listings. September program will be either the 14th or 21st. October is free but requires registration. 7) Treasurer Report (Bill Ruppert) – No Report 8) Membership Committee (Michael O’Brien) – No Report 9) Scholarship and Education Committee (Jerry Pence) a. Due date for scholarships has been changed to Oct. 31st (Before Thanksgiving). b. Discussion of promoting scholarships to students. 11) Community Enhancement Committee (Cody Hayo) a. Discussion of increasing community enhancement grants in the budget to $500.00. Various projects could be helped with this money, including the “Neighbors Naturescaping” through Brightside St. Louis; Butterfly House gardening program; Earthdance Farms in Ferguson. 12) History Committee (Bill Ruppert/Robert Weaver) a. The September issue of “The Gateway Gardener” commemorates the 10 t h anniversary of this publication. 13) Bylaws Committee (Lance Dauw) – No Report 14) Horticulture Co-op Representation Report ( Michael O’Brien/Doug Wolter/Rebecca Eisele) a. The Hort Co-op is having a special meeting, regarding the future of the Hort Co-op and its members. This meeting, investigating the developing crossroads and their impacts, will be held at Mike Duffy’s restaurant in Kirkwood, on Wednesday, August 19 t h . All LNAGSL members are invited, but they must preregister with Roy Gross. 15) New Business a. Discussion of the first joint meeting of the leadership of the Missouri Landscape and Nursery Association (MLNA) and Missouri Turf and Ornamental Council (MoTOC) on July 23rd in Columbia, MO. One of the goals of the meeting was discussing the topic of: “Common Ground: We are stronger together than we are as separate organizations.” Bill Ruppert presented in detail the pursuits of this meeting and leadership involved. This was the first of three such meetings. The second meeting will be held in September. b. Discussion of the “Milkweeds for Monarchs: The St. Louis Butterfly Project”. This project was launched by Mayor Slay in 2014, aligning with the City of St. Louis Urban Vitality & Ecology Initiative. It is an effort that advances objectives in the City of St. Louis Sustainability Plan, and carries out a priority in the Mayor's Sustainability Action Agenda. c. Discussion of the “Million Pollinator Garden Challenge”. This program is “a nationwide call to action to preserve and create gardens and landscapes that help revive the health of bees, butterflies, birds, bats and other pollinators across America.” It is promoted by the The National Pollinator Garden Network (NPGN), described as: “an unprecedented collaboration of national, regional, and local gardening clubs. Its founding private nonprofit and garden industry members were convened in Fall 2014, to propose efforts to help restore critical pollinator populations in support of the President’s Executive Strategy to ‘Promote the Health of Honey Bees and Other Pollinators.” d. Discussion of “BiodiverseCity St. Louis”, a program promoted by the Missouri Botanical Garden. “BiodiverseCity St. Louis is a growing network of organizations and individuals throughout the greater St. Louis region who share a stake in improving quality of life for all through actions that welcome nature into our urban, suburban and rural communities.” e. Grow Native! Update: Jennifer Schamber talked about the new branding program promoted by St. Louis Zoo, featuring 11 key native plants everyone must stock and grow. 1328 Forest Avenue Kirkwood, MO 63122
