Dearest NAYDians,

Happy and Blessed New Year to you, your families and collaborators

With a few days gone into the new year, please accept belated wishes as we all move further into 2011. May it be the year to catch up on all what we missed and take one more step towards the success we all deserve in our different initiatives. March 2011 will make NAYD 4 years old. And at this point, we have just produced our 38th edition of our online magazine INSPIRE. I must recognise the dependable and untiring efforts of Christian Tabifor and Paul Shaw in the survival of this magazine. In 2011, I pray God gives them more inspiration and energy to keep the boat afloat.

We now have over 900 web members from all over the continent of Africa and beyond as well as 90 facebook members, nearly 1500 who belong to the INSPIRE Google group and 450 to the NAYD Yahoo group. When we started NAYD, we hoped that African youths like you and I would immediately see the need to meet, know one another and work together to achieve our different goals of development. To achieve this, we assumed that you and I would readily attend the monthly online meeting (that now holds twice monthly) to share opinions, make comments on the yahoogroup and other group issues, write about our individual stories in INSPIRE to let the world know and equally important, fill our country page on the NAYD website with the very best of information about our country and the youths who live in it. As one youth who has been around all this while, I must say I constantly feel we made all the wrong assumptions.

In 2010 though the number of NAYD country offices moved from 9 to 20, we still witnessed a marked lack of commitment at many different times - be it from Country Coordinators or from members. Many of us NAYDians do not know who our Country Coordinators are and what their roles are. Many Country Coordinators do not have a single report of what they have done since we elected them in May.

In 2011, I pray that we correct these lapses and do our share in showing the world that African youths not only live, but work for a better continent. We have INSPIRE and our website to showcase all our activities (trainings, workshops, visits, etc). Never hesitate to keep the pictures and texts about the wonderful work we do coming. On this count, I will like to appreciate the effort made by NAYD Kenya and NAYD Somalia to feed our news website with information and the many Youth-Led NGOs that tell us about what they do.

To end, I would say the key thing in moving forward is communication between all members and would encourage all of us to get involved and have our say - NAYD offers various social media and other web based mass communication systems to facilitate this so TAKE ADVANTAGE of - the NAYD Facebook group for general chat with photographs, - the LinkedIn group for more professional discussions, - the Youtube page to upload videos of your activities to NAYD TV, - the YAHOO group to post opportunities for youths and the - INSPIRE Google group to chat about what you read in INSPIRE.

This July, we youths of Africa have a golden opportunity to ensure we have a permanent and strong voice within the AU and we need to grasp NAYD Ethiopia’s initiative (with the Pan African Youth Movement) with both hands. For more information about this, just mail me ([email protected]) or NAYD Ethiopia ([email protected]).

Once again, accept the best of wishes for 2011 and let us hear more from you this year.
