Brief description of International Education Activity and how it is integrated into the classroom curriculum: Some of the lessons are:

Second Grades – Scott Foresman fluency reader –“Giving Thanks Around the World” with a focus on China, Africa, and India. Children will read and discuss ways the children give thanks. The teacher will use maps to locate countries and selected internet sites for the children to do research on the country they selected.

Third and Fifth Grades – children will work with “Study Buddies”- a 3rd and 5th grader on each team. First the Third Grade Social Studies book will be used for the lessons, “A Nation of Immigrants” and “People Express Their Culture”. Then the groups will research, using designated web sites, celebrations around the world. They will make an ABC classbook, label maps, use downloaded internet pictures, etc. They are planning on a small ‘International Fair” to share with the First Grades and Kindergartens.

Fourth Grades – These classes will use a story in their Scott Foresman reading book about a little girl who lives in a fishing village in Mexico. The story is very graphic about the living conditions. Children will contrast and compare her life with theirs.

Based upon our school menu, we are recognizing one country per day this week. Fifth grade students have researched some interesting information about each country and are presenting it each morning on the intercom. Because our school population is so diverse, we have students that speak the language of that country for three of the six countries recognized. These students are saying a few things to their fellow classmates in their native language over the intercom each morning. Teachers are following up our efforts by including activities regarding that country into their daily activities within the classroom.

The students will read the story and participate in hands-on activities to learn the vocabulary/reading skills from the story. In addition, the school Librarian will provide resource materials such as videos and story books about the Chinese Culture. The classroom teachers will utilize these supplemental materials to enhance their International lesson.

At Geneva Kent Elementary, one of our goals is to provide opportunities for our students to become 21st century global thinkers. In addition to programs already in place we will initiate “Miss Connie’s Friends” program. Each day, the students will receive a fictitious letter from a child in another country. From clues within the letter, the classes will determine the child’s country. If the class correctly identifies all five locations, the students will receive a class prize.

Also, on Thursday, Geneva Kent will be participating in Read to Me Day. Community readers will read to our classes books related to their various cultures and backgrounds.

Pre- K students- Students will talk about Tea Time in GREAT BRITIAN and compare it to America’s coffee. Students will be shown cups and scones. The British Flay will be compared to the American flag and the monarchial government and democratic governments will be compared. Smart Boards and Elmos will be used for access to websites offering needed information.

First-Mexico—Student will be shown a Powerpoint the continents/countries and Mexican artifacts will be shown. A guest speaker from Bolivia (in costume)will read to the students in Spanish and traditional Mexican costumes will be worn on Friday.

Second-China-Studens will locate China on a map and globe and via Google Earth—labeling and coloring the map. Students will discuss and listen to Chinese version of “London Bridge” and will learn/sing the song using Chinese lyrics. Chinese checkers will be learned/played. Students will learn common Chinese words. “Little Red Riding Hood” will be read to students and then “Lon Po Po”, the Chinese version, will be read to them. Chinese New Year will be discussed—custom of the red envelopes and the Night of the Lanterns. Students may dress in Chinese style clothing to celebrate.

Third- Germany—Students will find Germany on a map and globe and by using Google Earth. Country, color and flag will be discussed. Beethoven and Brahms music will be played. Students will learn common German school words. The story of the “Pied Piper” will be read to the students. Students will learn the German numbers from 1-10 and some common everyday phrases. Make a thermometer—(Fahrenheit invented the thermometer) Students will dress in German style clothing on Friday.

Fourth-China-Students will be introduced to unit on China and will locate China on a map, globe and using Google Earth. The Smart Board will be used. A Reader’s Theater of the Four Dragons will be presented, again using the Smart Board. Students will make a dancing dragon. A guest speaker will give a slide show of apparel that is well known among the Chinese.

Fifth-Students will do a K-W-L on Greece. A Power Point presentation will be given and projects will be assigned. Students will find Greece on a map, globe and using Google Earth. The basic needs of the Chinese/American people will be discussed and compared. Historic sites will be located using the Smart Board. Students will share posters, reports, photos etc with the class. 11/17……………Chinese Acrobats: Shows cultural diversity and physical activitity 11/18……………Huntington Museum of Art: The museum comes to the school and gives students hands-on experience with different aspects of art to encourage creativity. 11/20…………….Read To Me Day: Parents and various members of the community come to classrooms and read aloud to students. Class participation is encouraged and parents can come dressed as a favorite book character. The visuals help keep students attention and increase their curiosity of book reading. 11/21……………..Appreciation Tea: Students host a special tea for teachers, and administrators to show their appreciation for the work done on their behalf. Community members come and read to class rooms while teachers attend the tea and 5th grade students host.

CLE will be hosting 10 students & 2 teachers from Hong Kong. They will arrive during their Chinese New Year (last week of Jan.-first week of Feb.). They will be staying with our families and going to school with us. Before there arrival we will be doing many activities to prepare for their visit. Host families will be emailing, teachers will have their students learn about the many aspect of Hong Kong, we will pod cast our Christmas program to them. We are planning many things for them to do while they are here. We would like for them to visit Charleston and the capitol. Once they return we will continue to have contact with our new friends. My father-in-law was in the service, so he and his family have lived in many parts of the world. My father-in-law was in the service. They spent 4 years in Japan. I am inviting her as a guest reader to come to my class to share her knowledge of Japan.

Another reader is going to teach my students to say “Hello” in four different languages, and talk about Thanksgiving traditions in different parts of the world. Students will have packets to take home and share with their families as well as to work with the quest during the read aloud.

We are also going to get on the computers and write a few paragraphs about Thanksgiving in our own country and homes. This will be a follow-up activity.

Brief description of International Education Activity and how it is integrated into the classroom curriculum:

Every morning over the school’s announcements there are mini conversational Spanish lessons e.g. colors, numbers, phrases, nouns, verbs etc. The kindergarten classes also teach the reading of Spanish words, such as colors etc. The fourth grade also teaches name of months etc., as we all have a Salsa teacher’s manual.

Each class has done something, either once or several times, in regards to teaching about other cultures. The Pre-k classes both talked about England in relation to Thanksgiving and the country today – they counted in Spanish to ten, reviewed the Spanish words they knew and read books about other cultures each day. The kindergarten classes read and discussed the story about China’s Pandas in their Weekly Reader and located China on the globe. The first grade classes talked about Native Americans in the past and present and had a Federally Recognized Maidu guest speaker. They also talked about Great Britain and the founding of the United States. There was discussion and acknowledgement about cooperation between two different cultures in regards to the settling of America. They also compared and contrasted the two cultures of England and the United States as we know then today. The second grade read about different countries. The third grade had the students study the Wampanoag tribe of New England and Squanto’s journey to England. The fourth grade used the November 19, 2008 Mineral Daily News Tribune article on Red Sea Piracy to relation to the geography of that part of the world by highlighting all the cities and countries mentioned in the article and then used individual student world maps to locate the foreign cities and talk about the cultures.

In addition, our first grade LEP student, from Guatemala, caught snowflakes for the first time (on black paper) and the class talked about the differences in geography, culture and snow crystals.

Our Pre-K classroom studied the Pilgrims, where they came from and how they interacted with the Indians. They also had a play for the parents and a mock dinner of the foods of that time. Grades Kindergarten through 5th had readers to come in to read for 30 minutes. Many of the books were from many cultures and authors from around the world. Most of our Partners in Education, local business people and our Parent Group were involved in this activity.

First and Second Grade at Scarbro Elementary will take a journey to Indonesia: On Monday we will start with a view of Indonesia at MyWonderfulWorld.com. The characters of Sesame Street will introduce us to the music, dance, and games of Indonesia. On Tuesday our guest speaker will present slides of Indonesia. Mr. Ganbill also has items from Indonesia for the children to see and even a puppet known as Wayang which are used for folk stories. We will be sharing stories of the country. We will begin our project of creating a quilt of the flags of countries of the world On Wednesday we will be listening to songs and nursery rhymes of the country. We will also visit the language and holidays of the country. On Thursday we will do the activity "Where does it come from" students will see that things they use everyday comes from all over the world. On Friday the students will finish by using the computer to go on a “photo safari" The flags will be sewn into a quilt to be displayed in our school lobby.

More United States Tradition and how it all began in the United States: Scarbro Elementary will be having a Thanksgiving Celebration on Friday, November 21, 2008. Parents are invited to come and celebrate with their child. Activities for the day will include:  Appalachian Music - featuring a musician from Fayette County  Crafts – handprint turkeys and pilgrim hats  Developmentally Appropriate Games  Wilderness Pictures - each student will get their picture made in front of a wilderness background with animals and trees  Thanksgiving Puppet Show – a parent volunteer is doing this  Thanksgiving Lunch – Parents are invited to come and eat with their child  Indian Storytelling – featuring storytellers from Clay County  Story time – Parent volunteers will read Thanksgiving stories to the students  Mayflower Presentation – this will be shown on the Intelliboard

Each class will rotate to the various stations throughout the day. Parents can follow along with their child. Scarbro students are also encouraged to bring in a non-perishable food item that week which will be given to the local food pantry.

Purpose: Celebrating International Education Week, the goal of this presentation was to introduce the Japanese culture to the local community schools. Most of the presenters are spouses of employees in Japanese companies (Toyota, NGK Sparkplugs, Diamond Electric, Nippon Thermostat). As part of the corporate citizenship, the Japanese want to give back to the communities where they live, work, and their children attend school. The Japanese presenters were impressed with how smart, engaged, and well-behaved the students were.

Students at Lumberport Elementary School have participated in a variety of International Education activities this year! Students in preschool through fifth grades in speech classes made “Samurai Word Warrior” helmets using newspapers and origami skills. They also practiced their words, made sentences, and paragraphs, and used them in conversation as appropriate for their IEP goals. Speech students also had a Japanese language lesson and learned greetings for different times of day and social comments. An international display including a world map for all to view was on display outside the speech classroom. The librarian introduces common foreign language words to all students throughout the year and the students respond to her with their new vocabulary when she calls roll. For International Education week, they used Japanese words. The fourth grade students read a book about the Titanic, and researched and read the passenger list from a website while in the library. Fifth grade students read about World War II spies, both the axis and allies, and many students checked out books related to the war. Fourth grade students enjoyed a DVD presentation of Japanese children in their school. The DVD teaches about the daily routines in schools, including students cleaning the schools, serving the meals, and students wearing different colored hats on the playground to identify which group with which they belong. A vocabulary word list was also presented to the fourth grade students. The third grade classes began Rosetta Stone’s Spanish instruction in our distance learning lab. The initial lesson was taught during International Education Week, and was presented by the school district’s elementary supervisor. A third grade teacher will continue the lessons throughout the year. Kindergarten and first grade students spent the week learning about diversity and tolerance while studying the history of the first Thanksgiving. First grade students learned about Holland and England. Finally, our intermediate Partners in Print activities were held this week; the parents and students worked on activities together with the Title I teachers utilizing “Strega Nona” stories, and several Cinderella stories from around the world. The results of these fun learning activities are posted along the school’s main hallway for all to see.

International Week at Pinch Elementary will be celebrated in all areas in the school. In music, the students will be introduced to musical selections from around the world, in Physical Education, games of other countries will be explored. Our art will be centered around the “Australian Outback.” When in the library, the students will be listening to literary selections from other cultures. During the three lunch periods on November 17th, the principal will show a PowerPoint to the students, showcasing the schools in China that she visited while studying there. We will also participate in a school-wide blog with several of our students that are traveling in Kenya with their parents. They will be visiting a “sister” school that Pinch Elementary adopted and raise funds for each year. Our students also will be communicating on epals with another classroom from Australia. Each classroom will read literature selections from different countries and compare and contrast the cultures.

Brief description of International Education Activity and how it is integrated into the classroom curriculum: Mount Vernon is going a community wide year-long multicultural unit focusing on global awareness. The principal read “The World is Flat.” This started the change process. The LSIC then got involved. The program then started in the community. The organizations in the community were visited. They watched the ‘DID YOU KNOW’ video clip from ‘You Tube’ so they would see the need for change into 21st Century learning. The employees also went through a similar training. The staff decided to study India, China, Japan, and Mexico- one each nine weeks. The first month was India. There were several activities throughout the nine weeks- decorations everywhere, facts about India on the walls, projects in the classrooms, etc.

For the 2nd nine weeks the theme is China. The front entrance is decorated with important information about China. The classroom teachers are integrating the theme into the curriculum. Kindergarten is using tangrams in math and reading stories from China. They are going on a pretend plane ride to China. The 2nd grade students are making a book about China. The 3rd through 5th grade students are creating a web-page about China on ThinkQuest. They are also communicating with students from all over the world through ThinkQuest. The 3rd through 5th grade students are using the 21st Century CSO’s in math to learn about China. For instance, the students use a variety of charts and graphs from China to practice addition, subtraction, etc. They are doing art activities. There is a person from China coming to visit the school and do a presentation with the students. There will be a day of celebration in which the students will play games and do art work from China.

Some of the activities planned for the year are mentioned above. There are too many to mention all of them.
