John 5:1-9 After This There Was a Feast of the Jews; and Jesus Went up to Jerusalem

NEW TESTAMENT SURVEY THE GOSPELS LECTURE 18

Going to the pool John 5:1-9 After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. 3 In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. 4 For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. 5 And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? 7 The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. 8 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. 9 And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.

This was probably the Feast of Passover. In Jerusalem there is a pool named Bethesda, which means ‘house of mercy’; and this pool was said to be about 360ft x 130ft x 75ft (LxWxD). Why did God have this happen? Was it to teach the Jews that God can and does heal? Why was it just the first one stepping in after the water was stirred…why not all of them there? Jesus noticed a person who for 38 years would never be the first down for he had no friends (no-one that really cared about him) to help him in; it was almost futile in the man’s mind, but he went anyways. Jesus looks for people like this; unfair predicaments; really needing some mercy. What type of people might this be around you? He had some type of faith, for he obeyed Jesus and rose up; was he saved here? I doubt it. God wanted him to pick up his bedding in order to be cause the ultra-religious Jews to cry out about ‘working on the Sabbath’.

Follow-up visits John 5:10-16 The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed. 11 He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk. 12 Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk? 13 And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place. 14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee. 15 The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole. 16 And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.

These so-called ‘religious’ leaders were basically standing around looking for someone doing something ‘wrong’. There are Preachers (and Christians) who seem to do the same thing ‘at church’. This man was healed but he didn’t even know who Jesus was (and thus, not a believer). Jesus made sure to follow up on good ‘prospects’; He did it privately; spoke to him about sin. A person getting saved should set out to ‘sin no more’. Jesus teaches us here about continuing in sin and then ‘worse things come upon you’. Are we allowed to ‘work on the Sabbath’? Is Sunday the Christian Sabbath? “Yes and no”; it should be treated much like the Sabbath, but the Sabbath will always be the 7th day of the week. Should a Christian work on Sunday?

Like Father, like Son John 5:17-23 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. 18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God. 19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. 20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel. 21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will. 22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: 23 That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.

Understand this, that Jesus many times was stating that He indeed was God… as He did here. To say that God was your Father was the same as saying you were equal with God, i.e. you are God (and Jesus said this many times). What was Jesus doing while He was down here on Earth?... everything that His Father told Him to do; each day was a new day for obeying His Father. Jesus did these great miracles so that the Jews could ‘marvel’; this helped them believe. His Father has given Him (Jesus) all power and authority; all judging is via Jesus (Judgment Seat of Christ and the Great White Throne Judgment). 1 From death unto life Jn 5:24-29 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. 25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. 26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; 27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. 28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

One of the firmest declarations of the eternal security of the believer in the Bible (hears and believes = everlasting life; there is no condemnation upon him; he has indeed passed from death to life…eternally)! Does one actually have to ‘hear the truth of the Bible on salvation’ in order to get saved? There are some that say one can’t be saved unless they hear (or read) the truth from the KJV Bible (i.e. not the NIV or others). What does it mean ‘to not come into condemnation’? It seems to speak of a future condemnation; and that is not going to happen; i.e. they won’t be condemned to Hell at a future judging event. When will ‘all that are in the graves hear his voice’? It would be ‘the Rapture’. When does each resurrection take place? ‘of life’ is at the Rapture (all the saved); ‘of damnation’ is at the Great White Throne Judgment (all the lost); They are 1007 years apart. Is it all based on whether you’ve done ‘good’ or ‘evil’?.... I assume the ‘good’ here is talking of receiving Jesus Christ, and ‘evil’ as rejecting Him.

Are there any witnesses Jn 5:30-37a I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me. 31 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. 32 There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. 33 Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth. 34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved. 35 He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. 36 But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. 37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me.

Did Jesus have a ‘will’? Could He have disobeyed His Father? Could Jesus have sinned? Yes, no, no. He had His ‘own will’ but His nature was such that could not sin…it was impossible to. There are 3 that bear record in Heaven: the Father, The Word, and the Holy Ghost. Jesus also had John the Baptist bearing witness of Him just before He presented Himself to the world. And, Jesus’ works bore witness of Him.

Search the Scriptures Jn 5:37b-47 Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. 38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. 39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. 40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. 41 I receive not honour from men. 42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. 43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. 44 How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. 46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. 47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

There is no excuse for not seeing that the Scriptures solidly testify of Jesus being ‘eternal life’. The Jews have to purposely avoid this when they ‘search the scriptures’; they are searching with a bias; our biases can send us straight to Hell! Are there people out there that we should speak to like Jesus did here? What did Moses say about Jesus? He speaks of the ‘Prophet’ that would come. These Jews only believed what they wanted to believe; what they agreed with. They didn’t believe all that Moses said, or that any other book of the Bible said. They believed what they wanted to believe; much like the religious folks today believe about the Bible!

2 Breaking the Law Matt 12:1-8 1 At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat. Mk 2:23 And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn. Lk 6:1 And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands. 2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day. Mk 2:24 And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful? Lk 6:2 And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days? 3 But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him; 4 How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests? Mk 2:25 And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him? Lk 6:3 And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him; 5 Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless? Mk 2:26 How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him? Lk 6:4 How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone? 6 But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple. 7 But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless. 8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day. Mk 2:27-28 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: 28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath. Lk 6:5 And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

They had cornfields in Israel; thus, it is not a desert wasteland. What?!…were the Pharisees hiding in the cornfields to see if they did anything wrong?! What was unlawful? Putting forth effort to obtain food. Why was David ok in what he did? “David, fleeing before Saul, weary and hungry, had come to Ahimelech the priest; had found only this bread; had asked it of him, and had eaten it contrary to the "letter" of the law, 1 Sam 21:1-7. David, among the Jews, had high authority. This act had passed uncondemned. It proved that in "cases of necessity the laws did not bind a man" - a principle which all laws admit. So the "necessity" of the disciples justified them in doing on the Sabbath what would have been otherwise unlawful.” (Barne’s Notes) Certain would be exempt from following the Sabbath laws: those performing functions associated with the law; i.e. the priests. Also, David was the king and would be given much liberty in association with following the law; thus, certain highly important situations would allow one to negate following a law. This would be true when the Israelites were in battle; surely, they would fight on the Sabbath if their enemy were attacking them…

There are four ways in which positive laws may cease to oblige: First, by the natural law of necessity; Secondly, by a particular law, which is superior; Thirdly, by the law of charity and mercy; Fourthly, by the dispensation and authority of the Lawgiver. (Adam Clarke's Commentary) Man was more important than the laws, per se. The sabbath was made to be a blessing to man. Jesus could change a law, because He was the lawgiver.

A man is better than a sheep Matt 12:9-13 9 And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue: Mk 3:1 And he entered again into the synagogue; and there was a man there which had a withered hand. Lk 6:6 And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered. 10 And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him. Mk 3:2 And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the sabbath day; that they might accuse him. 3 Lk 6:7 And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him. 11 And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? 12 How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days. Mk 3:3-4 And he saith unto the man which had the withered hand, Stand forth. 4And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace. Lk 6:8-9 But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth. 9Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it? 13 Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other. Mk 3:5 And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other. Lk 6:10 And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.

These Pharisees were really ‘hung up’ on the ‘breaking of the Sabbath’ with Jesus and His disciples; it was the one area that they thought they could ‘beat’ Him at. But, Jesus had rightly explained the purpose and the rules for the sabbath; they just kept ignoring what He had to say. Some are out there today that just want to catch a ‘extremist Christian’ at something to accuse them. Jesus Christ so eloquently ‘wastes’ there line of argument! When they have nothing to say in response, then you have brought them to the end of their foolish line of reasoning…Praise the Lord! Jesus looked at them with anger; was that wrong? How often will our anger be ‘righteous anger’? Rarely… One key rule noted here is that it is lawful to do good on the sabbath day. Thus, it is important for us to understand the ‘spirit’ behind the laws, principles, rules in the Bible and not just ‘the letter of the law’. For example, we are to be holy for God is holy; the Pastor will be ‘working with’ immature Christians who will take some time to be ‘holy’ (or holier); if demanded they be holy right from the start, then that could cause them to stumble and give up; look at their heart, not so much like a Pharisee would be looking for something to accuse them of!
