Listening Lesson Plan

Background on lesson:

Context: Class profile: Group of 20 adult immigrant ESL students from Washington D.C. Age: Mid 20s to 50s Level: Low intermediate to intermediate

Learner Needs: These people are seeking to improve their social and professional language for job opportunities.

Objectives/Aims: The general objective of the lesson is to develop learners’ listening skills through the use of audiovisual material. The learners will practice skills by listening for general ideas/themes, then listening for more specific information, and finally listening for details such as specific words to fill in the gaps.

Assumptions: Their low intermediate to intermediate level means most of them probably have some proficiency in the basics of English. But since they are not over the intermediate level threshold yet, they would probably enjoy lessons with entertaining formats that are non-threatening.

Language Analysis: Question formats; relevant vocabulary; relevant tenses.

Anticipated Problems and Solutions: Since the learners are adults, they may have some preset attitudes towards learning languages that might not necessarily coincide with our perspectives and methods. But because they are in the U.S. for job opportunities, they should be at least extrinsically motivated to learn English. We can take advantage of this motivation, provide positive feedback, and create low anxiety learning environment. We might also have to explain how the classes will benefit their success in the workplace.

Materials: Video clip either online or as a DVD; list of new vocabulary; ‘organize events into the correct sequence’ worksheet; gap fill worksheet.

Timing: 60 minutes Georgetown University TEFL Certification Program Copyright, July 2009
