Word Building Strategy Performance Task Scenario for Word Building Strategy

Goal:

 Your goal is to use prefixes, root words, and suffixes to predict the meaning of words involved in a food web.

Task 1:

1. Watch the short video clip from the movie Akeelah and the Bee. As you view the video, consider how the video relates to your content area. 2. Spread the cards out so the prefixes, root words, and suffixes are facing up and each person can see the terms.

3. Use the cards to create words.

4. Record your words in the Word Building Chart in your packet by identifying the prefixes, root words, and suffixes used.

5. Read the back of each card making one word and predict and record the meaning of the word.

6. Share your word building chart with another group. Discuss any questions the group may have about the words you created.

7. Use a dictionary or online support to determine and record the actual meaning of the word.

8. Shuffle the cards and place back in the resealable plastic bag.

Task 2:

1. Read pages 500-501. 2. In your journal, create a list of words from the passage that are composed of prefixes, root words, and suffixes. 3. Determine the meaning of the list of words from the prefixes, root words, and suffixes. You may use a dictionary or online resource.

Task 3:

1. Study the food webs pictured on pages 500 and 501. 2. Create a chart in your journal to identify each of the organisms in either the land food web (page 500) or the marine food web (page 501) as producer, consumer, or decomposer.
