NarNarayan Dev Jayanti

NarNarayan Dev Jayanti celebrates the birth of Lord Narayan and Lord Nar in Satyug on Fagan Sud Poonam (15).

NarNarayan Dev incarnated to defeat the evil demon Kunchi. By performing immense penance to Brahma, Kunchi was granted a boon that he would be near enough impossible to kill. He was protected by a thousand shields and to destroy one shield would require the opposition to perform one thousand years of taap and then enter into battle with Kunchi for a further thousand years. Thus he became known as Sahastra-Kunchi. He felt invincible and began to harass the demigods and human kind.

Bhagwan decided to relieve his devotees from the miseries of Kunchi and decided to manifest on earth as NarNarayan Dev to. Dharmadev and his consort Muritdevi meditated upon Lord with immense love. Thus they were blessed with the dual form of NarNarayan, who was born as 16 year old brahmcharis in contra to baby toddlers. The birth was rejoiced and celebrated with great pomp and splendour. By the wish of Dharmadev, Devtas made a swing decorated with fragrant and colourful flowers. NarNarayan Dev graced the swing and devtas swayed NarNarayan Dev and showered them with beautiful scented flowers.

NarNarayan Dev explained that his sole purpose for this incarnation is to destroy evil Kunchi and protect the devotees of Bharatkhand. He left for Badrikashram. Whilst Lord Nar performed taap for a thousand years Lord Narayan fought Kunchi to destroy one of the protective shields. They would then alternate and continued this rotation of penance and battle until Kunchi had one shield remaining. Kunchi realised he was on the edge of defeat and death. He retreated and went to seek refuge under SuryaNarayan Dev, who offered Kunchi protection.

However, this was not the end of Kunchi. In the Dwapur Yug, Kunchi was reborn as Karna to Kunti. In this very era, to destroy evil and establish dharma Lord Narayan reincarnated as Lord Shree Krishna to Vasudev and Devki and Lord Nar reincarnated as Arjun to King Pandava and Kunti. Karna was killed by Arjun in the great war between Pandavas and Kauravs.

To this very day, NarNarayan Dev continues to perform taap in Badrikahsram for the welfare of the people of Bharatkhand. Narnarayan Dev was born near the banks of River Sabarmati (formerly referred to as DevNadi) in the city of Ahemdabad. This place is still present in Ahemdabad, Gujarat and is now referred to as Narayan Ghaat.

This auspicious day, also known as Fuldol Utsav, is commemorated by constructing a swing decorated with scented colourful flowers and swaying NarNarayan Dev to and fro with love and affection.
