Convergence of ABE and Community College Curriculum Academy Learners learn best when they form pathways for recall and by making connections between what they already know and new information insures that they will create the pathways necessary for recall. CORD recommends that educational organizations implementing Adult Career Pathways should also provide faculty members with the tools to improve the performance of the learners in their respective classrooms. This academy focuses on helping the participants—ABE and College faculty—to construct their own knowledge of convergence of ABE and Community College Curriculum. In other words, facilitate the process of discovering how what they are doing works or doesn’t work and how to utilize strategies designed specifically for developing deeper understanding of key concepts both academic and CTE among the students in this bridge program. Adults enter education settings with a tremendous knowledge base. Many times in helping this group move to the next level, we have to uncover what they know and help them align what they know with the content as it is taught at the college. Multiple Intelligences will also be explored. The associated evidence- based practices will be demonstrated so that faculty members are able to immediately begin implementing practices that will make a difference in the adult learners’ performance. With increased emphasis on rigorous curriculum, it is even more important to make the connections between rigorous academic content and relevant applications of that content through Career Technical Education.  Four Keys to Improving the Adult Learners’ Performance: 1. Communicate expectations 2. Use evidence-based teaching strategies 3. Align rigorous standards vertically as well as horizontally 4. Align content and assessment  Developing evidence-based teaching strategies to improve performance;  Discovering the rigorous academic content embedded in work-based learning & CTE programs;  Using Life Roles as a context for learning;  Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships: Critical for Engaging All Learners; and  Making connections with Project-based Learning, Career Portfolios, and Projects.

This professional development program will be designed around local teams (faculty members, workforce development, CBO) and will be delivered via a kick-off 2-day workshop followed by six weeks of asynchronous online assignments and support via Blackboard. At the end of the six-weeks online training the teams will come back again for another 2-day face-to-face training. Faculty will be expected to participate both face-to-face and online. Faculty members will share their experiences implementing the strategies learned in the educational offering and will learn from each other. Faculty reflections of classroom experiences and learning are a major component of this professional development.
