Cover It Up As a student of environmental science you will learn many reasons for covering textbooks. Protecting the cover of a book so that it will last longer, delays the need to manufacture and print a replacement book. This results in numerous environment benefits: It decreases the need to harvest timber, which preserves habitats and maintains species diversity. Decreased pollution of water by bleach (which is used to manufacture white paper), inks, glues and other by-products of the printing and binding process, which decreases the poisoning of aquatic and terrestrial plant and animal species. Reduced need for the fossil fuels necessary to ship additional textbooks to the school, which will reduce air pollution and result in fewer of the respiratory problems associated with oxides of nitrogen, tropospheric ozone, aldehydes, peroxyacyl nitrates and other primary and secondary air pollutants. This assignment is to cover your book. Your book cover will be graded on the following: Your choice of material The neatness of your cover The durability of your cover The artistry of your cover The cleverness of your design Your choice of topics Select a material for your cover that minimizes its impact on the environment. The cover must also accept your design. Your book cover should “advertise” APES, but it should be unique. Anyone who sees your book should know immediately that it is an APES book. You may depict any topic to be studied this year in APES. If you have a favorite subject, use it, if you can’t immediately think of something, look through the book for ideas. Avoid doing what a third grader might do: don’t simply draw a globe, an Earth with a happy face on it, or a big recycling symbol. Do not copy a diagram or picture from the textbook. Creative designs will be rewarded with higher grades. You must draw a design on the front and back of your bookcover, it must be hand-drawn, and hand-lettered. No typed, cut out, printed materials, or pictures are acceptable. You will display your bookcover in class, where it will be graded, and judged by the class. The best covers will earn extra credit. Your book must remain covered throughout the school year.
