1. Read about the rocks of the Chumstick Formation, our 2nd stop on the field trip. a. Go to the following websites to read about this particular sedimentary rock. Write a brief summary of the age, rock type, and paleoenvironment of the Chumstick Formation.

2. Read about the Channeled Scablands of Eastern Washington (http://www.nps.gov/history/history/online_books/geology/publications/inf/72-2/contents.htm). In your own words, write a ½-1 page summary of the formation of the Scablands. Be sure to discuss the following topics: a. When the lava flows formed and their extent and thickness. b. Why would you find columnar jointing and pillow basalts in these lava flows. c. Timing of the Great Ice Age and glacial extent into Washington and Montana. d. How did glacial lake Missoula form, its extent and depth. Click on Figure 10 and notice the smaller Lake Spokane and the much larger Lake Missoula to the east. e. What happened that caused Glacial Lake Missoula to drain? f. Explain what happened during the Spokane Floods (also called the Missoula Floods). How did these floods carve the Channeled Scablands?

3. Take a virtual field trip to Frenchman’s Coulee, the first stop on day 2 of the actual field trip. Using your laptop, go to the following webpage: http://commons.wvc.edu/rdawes/VirtualFieldSites/FrenchmanCoulee/VFSFrnchmnCoulee.html. Read the page carefully and look at the accompanying pictures. a. Click on each of the pictures and examine each carefully. b. Describe, in your own words, colonnade vs. entablature structure of the lava flows, the Roza flow in particular, what kind of phenocrysts the basalt has, and what you find at the base of the flow. c. Copy the statigraphic column (multi-colored table at the bottom of the page) onto your page.
