EUFMC 2017 Delivers Educational Value to Utility Fleet Professionals

New conference app provides all-in-one source of information

More than 120 fleet representatives and over 325 representatives from 101 manufacturers and service providers attended the 2017 Electric Utility Fleet Manufacturers Conference from June 4-7, 2017 at the Williamsburg Lodge and Conference Center, Williamsburg, Virginia.

“The EUFMC educational program, equipment exhibits and networking opportunities continue to generate growing interest among fleet executives from investor-owned electric utilities, electric cooperatives and electrical contractors in the U.S. and Canada,” said Mike Allison, EUFMC President and Director Design and Tech Support Services at Duke Energy. “This conference continues to be a valuable forum for addressing challenges and exchanging ideas.”

All-in-one information source New at EUFMC this year was an event app that put everything attendees needed to know during the 64th annual conference at their fingertips, including schedules, activity details, speaker information, attendee lists, and more.

Inspiring Excellence in Utility Fleet Professionals Leading off the 2017 EUFMC educational program was Keynote Speaker Lloyd Yates, Executive Vice President of Customer and Delivery Operations at Duke Energy.

“Customers want choice, convenience and quality,” Yates said. “We have a ten- year plan to build a smarter energy future, and are making investments that add value, including meeting customer needs with a diverse energy mix. At the same time, the grid is the backbone of our digital economy, and tolerance for outages is down significantly, so 99.77% reliability is no longer good enough.

“As we are building a smarter energy future for our customers, it’s important to have a safe, productive and efficient fleet,” Yates added. “We look to our fleet to support that effort and we have a responsibility to be innovative in the way we invest in people, and in reliable vehicles and equipment.” The EUFMC General Session also featured presentations by fleets, industry experts and manufacturers. Well attended were highly popular roundtables where fleet executives and manufacturers addressed common challenges by sharing best practices and solutions.

Topics this year included regulatory & legislative and ANSI updates, several sessions focused on safety, legal issues, the challenges of technician training, development and retention, fleet electrification, using telematics, KPIs and reporting, and how the upcoming FASB rule change may affect leasing decisions.

On Display The annual EUFMC drive through featured educational and technical presentations by suppliers detailing the design features, specifications, capabilities and benefits of their latest technologies for electric utilities. The event also included an equipment show with over 60 displays.

Special Events Frank Abagnale, renowned cyber security and fraud prevention expert, bestselling author and subject of Catch Me If You Can was the EUFMC dinner speaker this year. One of the world's most respected authorities on forgery, embezzlement and secure documents, Abagnale's life story and rare blend of knowledge and expertise provided an inspirational message to EUFMC attendees.

Apprehended when he was 21 years old, Abagnale served time in the French, Swedish and U. S. prison systems. Released on the condition that he would help the federal government without remuneration by teaching and assisting federal law enforcement agencies, Abagnale has now been associated with the FBI for over four decades, and more than 14,000 financial institutions, corporations and law enforcement agencies use his fraud prevention programs.
