CLS Strategic Planning Committee Minutes Thursday, October 1, 2015 235 Morris Hall

Call to Order at 2:30 pm by Chairman Jörg Vianden

Present: Jörg Vianden, Kate Parker, Peter Stovall, Terry Smith, Andrew Ives, Linda Dickmeyer, Sheri Craig, and Consultant Charles Martin-Stanley Excused: Rob Dixon Absent: Karolyn Bald

Announcements

A. Charles explained why he needed to leave the role of chair. Thanks to Jörg for stepping up. B. Welcome to Pete Stovall in place of Sandy Keller C. Sheri Craig and Kate Parker will share the duties of secretary D. Goal is to have a quarterly report to Dean Johnson by the end of October

SWOT Analysis

A. Thanks to Kate for putting together raw data B. Jörg created a narrative to the themes under current strengths 1. All liked the narrative form of presenting the summary 2. Suggestions to make summary a bit clearer 2.a. Remove the wording “several participants” and “fewer participants” and possibly use actual number of groups

2.b. Raw data will be available to everyone 2.c. Make a category regarding the students 2.d. Agreed to place “desired strengths” under the “opportunities” category C. Subcommittees Teams to work on specific area of SWOT 1. Specific Area Teams 1.a. Strengths – Team 1.b. Weaknesses – Terry, Linda and Andrew 1.c. Opportunities – Sheri, Peter, and Rob 1.d. Threats – Karolyn, Jörg and Kate 2. Put themes in narrative form and send to Jörg to put in consistent wording 3. Complete assigned section of report no later the 10/13 and send to Jörg Page 2 CLS SPC 10/01/15

Outreach and data collection:

A. Target Participants 1. Visit which groups 1.a. As many of the approximately 13 department meetings as possible (including support staff) 1.b. Undergraduate students 1.c. Graduate students 1.d. Student senators 2. Our job at each of these visits is to listen to what everyone has to say

B. What data are we collecting 1. Visions for the college 2. Solutions to weaknesses and threats

C. Steps to accomplish visits 1. Ask the same questions of each group 2. Team sign up on Google Drive for availability to attend meetings

D. Questions to ask the groups to add to the SWOT analysis raw data already received 1. Review the current mission statement of CLS and tell us how your department fits into this mission/vision? 2. What strategies would you use to reach these visions for the good of the college? 3. How would you set your priorities for the college?
