PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS By: Robbie Lear, P.E., LSI
We are all saddened by the loss of Ken Robichaux. No one was a stranger for long when Ken was around. His passion for the engineering profession and serving the public good are second to none. Ken is the second friend I’ve lost to cancer this year. I’m reminded of how indiscriminate this disease is, and how difficult the battle can be to overcome its challenges. I will miss Ken and always remember his laughter and dedication.
As we move forward, a new member will fill the Secretary/Treasurer position for the Chapter. According to the bylaws, an election will take place at the next general membership meeting on November 8, 2007. Nominations will be opened at the meeting, and an election will immediately follow.
The Baton Rouge Chapter will be hosting our 14th annual LSU/Southern Student Function on November 8th. We are asking for sponsors from the engineering community to contribute to the William A. Wintz, Jr. Scholarship Fund, which helps make this event possible. All contributions are tax deductible and can be sent to me at 10305 Airline Highway, Baton Rouge, LA 70816. Checks should be made payable to the “LES Education Fund”.
The function starts at 5:00 pm at the Patrick F. Taylor Hall (formerly CEBA) on LSU’s campus with a 1 PDH ethics seminar. The seminar will be presented by Donna Sentell, LAPELS Executive Secretary, and will be a case study style format. While the professionals are earning their PDH’s, board members from LES and LAPELS will discuss licensure and the engineering profession with the engineering students. Our goal is to inform them of the importance of licensure and the benefits offered by LES. At 6:00, we will move to the south courtyard to enjoy a jambalaya dinner prepared by Chef Richard Savoie. We encourage you to mingle with the students and share your insight and experience in the engineering profession. You may even find your next superstar engineer!!!
The Future Cities competition needs your help. We need additional schools to sign up for the competition, and engineering mentors for some schools who have already signed up. Baton Rouge has won two of the last three national competitions. Our students can not compete nationally if we don’t have 25 schools signed up at the state level. Give our students a chance to compete while learning a thing or two yourself by volunteering as a school mentor for Future Cities. Additional information is included in this newsletter.
I am proud to announce the 2007 Baton Rouge Chapter Honors and Awards winners: Phil Meyers, P.E, Rhaoul Guillaume, P.E., Alan Krouse, P.E., Dr. Brian Wolshon, P.E., and Robbie Lear, P.E., LSI. These winners will be considered for the LES Statewide Honors and Awards, which are selected on November 30. The impressive talent pool within the Baton Rouge Chapter makes it difficult to choose just one nominee for each category. Please congratulate these members the next time you see them.
