Request for Permission to Take Economics/Finance Phd Program

APPENDIX 6 Admission to the Economics/Finance PhD Program The Economics Department offers two PhD tracks–Economics, and Economics and Finance. The Economics and Finance PhD track requires that you write a dissertation on a finance topic, usually under the supervision of a faculty member in the Finance section of the School of Management (SOM). This track also requires that you be formally accepted into the program after completing several finance courses beginning with FIN 600 and passing comprehensive exams in microeconomic theory and macroeconomic theory. Students accepted into this program may be required to write a third comprehensive exam in finance administered by the School of Management. Given the small number of faculty in the SOM Finance section who are willing to supervise PhD dissertations, on average no more than one full-time graduate student can be accepted into this program each year. If demand exceeds supply, several alternative strategies may be worth considering. For example, students can complete a field in finance and choose a related area in economics, such as monetary or macroeconomics for their second field and dissertation, or students can choose a second field in econometrics and a dissertation that applies it to a financial topic. For additional questions about this program, please see: Prof. Yoon, Economics Department Prof. Lasser, SOM (AA326, X-4874) Prof. Rydqvist, SOM (AA234, X-2673) Request for Permission to take the Economics/Finance PhD Program

This request should be filed with the Director of Graduate Studies (Economics) after completion of all Economics PhD core course requirements and passing both microeconomic and macroeconomic theory comprehensive exams.
