11. MAC services

2 The MAC sublayer provides an interface to the next higher layer and PHY. Such interface consists of a 3MAC sublayer management entity (MLME) and a MAC sublayer data entity (MLDE). Such entities are 4accessed through two service access points:

5— The MAC sublayer data entity service access point (MLDE-SAP).

6— The MAC sublayer management entity service access point (MLME-SAP).

11The PAC information base (PIB) consists of constants and variables required to manage the MAC sublayer 12or PHY layer of a PD. The PIB fields and attributes are presented in 39. A field may be read only, or 13read/write.

14The MLDE handles data transfer. The MLME handles access to the PIB, communication’s status, CFP 15management, channel scanning, reset of MAC sublayer, receiver enable, updating superframe 16configuration, PAC group management for discovery, peering, and di de-peering, re-peering, loss of 17synchronization, channel sounding, and ranging calibration. The service primitives between MAC sublayer 18and MAC user are shown in 2.

2 11.1.7 Receiver enable

2These primitives are used to enable or disable a receiver of a PD.

31.1.7.1 MLME.ReceiverEnable.Request

4This primitive allows the next higher layer to request that the receiver is either enabled for a finite period of 5time or disabled. The properties of this primitive are:

6MLME.ReceiverEnable.Request {

7 Defer;

8 RxOnTime;

9 RxOnDuration;

10}

11The primitive parameters are defined in 19.

12

13 Table 19 —MLME.ReceiverEnable.Request parameters Property Type Valid range Description

TRUE if the requested operation can be deferred until the next superframe, if the requested time has already passed. FALSE if Defer Boolean TRUE, FALSE. the requested operation is only to be attempted in the current superframe. This parameter is ignored during the CAP.

The number of symbols measured from the start of 0 to (224 −1) the superframe before the RxOnTime Integer receiver is to be enabled or 3 octets disabled. This parameter is ignored during the CAP.

The number of symbols for which the receiver is to RxOnDuration Integer 0 to (224 −1) be enabled. This property is equal to 0, if the receiver is to be disabled.

14

3Submission 18 Hernandez, Li, Dotlic, Miura 4(NICT) 5 1September 2015 IEEE P802.15-15-0709-020-0008

2 1The primitive enables the radio to receiver mode for a fixed duration, at a time relative to the start of the 2current or next superframe, or immediately during the CAP, or according to the TDD receiver mode, and 3without conflict with another higher priority operation of the radio transceiver.

4In case of conflicting operation with a higher priority task of the radio transceiver, the PD will interrupt the 5receive operation, until the completion of the superseded operation. The property RxOnDuration will be 6checked to determine whether the time has expired. If so, the ReceiverEnable primitive operation is 7complete. If not, the receiver is re-enabled until either the PD has another superseded task, or the time 8specified by the property RxOnDuration has expired. When the primitive is issued to disable the receiver, 9the PD will disable its receiver unless the radio transceiver has a higher priority task.

10This primitive may also be generated to cancel a previously generated request to enable the receiver. The 11receiver is enabled or disabled exactly once per primitive request.

12If the RxOnDuration parameter is equal to zero, the MLME requests the PHY to disable its receiver.

13During the CAP, the MLME ignores the DeferPermit and RxOnTime parameters and requests that the PHY 14enable or disable the receiver immediately. If the request is to enable the receiver, the receiver will remain 15enabled until RxOnDuration has elapsed.

16

171.1.7.2 MLME.ReceiverEnable.Confirm

18This primitive reports the results of the attempt to enable or disable the receiver. The properties of this 19primitive are: 20 21MLME.ReceiverEnable.Confirm {

22 Status;

23}

24The primitive parameters are defined in 20.

25

26 Table 20 —MLME.ReceiverEnable.Confirm parameters Property Type Valid range Description

SUCCESS, PAST_TIME, The result of the Status Enumeration ON_TIME_TOO_LONG, request to enable or INVALID_PARAMETER disable the receiver.

27

28The primitive is generated by the MLME and issued to its next higher layer in response to an 29MLME.ReceiverEnable.Request primitive. This primitive returns a status of either SUCCESS, if the 30request to enable or disable the receiver was successful or the appropriate error code. 31 32Before attempting to enable the receiver, the MLME first determines whether (RxOnTime + 33RxOnDuration) is less than the synchronization period interval. If (RxOnTime + RxOnDuration) is not less 34than the synchronization period interval, the MLME issues the MLME.ReceiverEnable.Confirm primitive 35with the property Status=ON_TIME_TOO_LONG. 3Submission 19 Hernandez, Li, Dotlic, Miura 4(NICT) 5 1September 2015 IEEE P802.15-15-0709-020-0008

2 1The MLME then determines whether the receiver can be enabled in the current superframe. If the current 2time measured from the start of the superframe is less than (RxOnTime – macSIFSPeriod), the MLME 3attempts to enable the receiver in the current superframe. If the current time measured from the start of the 4superframe is greater than or equal to (RxOnTime – macSIFSPeriod) and DeferPermit is equal to TRUE, 5the MLME defers until the next superframe and attempts to enable the receiver in that superframe. 6Otherwise, if the MLME cannot enable the receiver in the current superframe and is not permitted to defer 7the receive operation until the next superframe, the MLME issues the MLME.ReceiverEnable.Confirm 8with the property Status=PAST_TIME.

2When the primitive is received by the MLME, it will set phyCurrentPage and phyCurrentChannel equal to 3the values of the ChannelPage and ChannelNumber, respectively. If the TrackMode parameter is equal to 4TRUE, the MLME will track the synchronization period, i.e., enable its receiver just before the expected 5time of synchronization period. If the TrackMode parameter is equal to FALSE, the MLME will locate the 6synchronization period, but not continue to track it.

7If this primitive is received by the MLME while it is currently tracking the synchronization period, the 8MLME will not discard the primitive but will treat it as a new synchronization request.

Field Type Value range Description

The code index value for the UWB PHY transmitter to TxDPSIndex Integer 0 to 48 use in UWB SHR generation. A value of 0 indicates that the phyPreambleCode value is used. See note below.

The code index value for the UWB PHY receiver to use RxDPSIndex Integer 0 to 48 in SHR detection and reception. A value of 0 indicates that the phyPreambleCode value is used. See note below.

This specifies a time in µs after which the DPS selection will revert to use the phyPreambleCode value in both Integer 0 to (224 −1) DPSIndexDuration transmitter and receiver, assuming it is not ended earlier by the issuing of either an MCP-DATA.request or an MCP-DATA.indication primitive.

16Note: The TxDPSIndex and RxDPSIndex values select codes as per the “Preamble Sequence ID” column of Table 17 XX for the BPM-BPSK modulation mode, and as per parameter i of Table XX for the OOK modulation 18 mode where the DPS index specified here is i + 1. 19

2 1The MLME responds with an MLME.DPS.Confirm primitive with the appropriate status parameter, and 2assuming the MLME.DPS.Request has been successful, the resulting altered preamble codes persist until 3one of the follow events:

4 - The DPS is cancelled by issuing a new MLME.DPS.Request with zero values for both 5 TxDPSIndex and RxDPSIndex parameters,

6 - A frame is received and the MCP-DATA.indication primitive is generated,

7 - A frame is transmitted via an MCP-DATA.request primitive and the MCP-DATA.confirm 8 primitive is generated,

9 - The period specified by the DPSIndexDuration parameter expires and the MLME.DPS.indication 10 primitive is issued.

11The use of DSPS is further explained in TBD.

91.1.14 Ranging calibration

10A PD with a UWB PHY that supports ranging may optionally include the ability to dynamically 11characterize the internal delays that give rise to the phyTxRmarkerOffset and phyRxRmarkerOffset 12quantities. These quantities represent the propagation time from the internal transmit timestamp to the 13transmit antenna, and the propagation time from the receive antenna to the internal receiver timestamp. 14The MLME.Calibrate primitives are defined to support the characterization of these delays.

15

161.1.14.1 MLME.Calibrate.Request

17The MLME.Calibrate.request primitive attempts to have the PD respond with ranging marker offset 18information. There are no parameters for this primitive.

19MLME.Calibrate.Request { }

20In response to the MLME.Calibrate.request the MLME issues an MLME.Calibrate.confirm primitive.

3The MLME.Calibrate.Confirm primitive is generated by the MLME and issued to its next higher layer in 4response to an MLME.Calibrate.Request primitive.

5In some implementations the MLME.Calibrate.Confirm may return values calibrated into the PD during its 6manufacture, in other cases the DP may perform a physical measurement of the delays. Either way, since 7system delays may depend on the PHY configuration, it is recommended to configure the required 8phyModeSelection, phyPreambleCode, etc. before initiating the MLME.Calibrate.Request.

9If the MLME.Calibrate feature is supported, the MLME issues the MLME-CALIBRATE.confirm primitive 10with a Status of SUCCESS, indicating that the CalTxRMARKEROffset and CalRxRMARKEROffset 11values are valid, otherwise the returned Status the status parameter will be set to UNSUPPORTED.

2 The received signal strength for received frame. This is a measure of the RF power level at the antenna based on the gain setting in the RX chain and the measured signal level in the channel. For the UWB PHY the RSSI value is measured during the frame Preamble and locked when a valid SFD is detected. A value of zero indicates that RSSI measurement is not supported or was not measured for this frame. 1
