Foil Method of Multiplying Binomials

Foil Method of Multiplying Binomials

1. Multiply the First terms of each binomial. 2. Multiply the Inside terms and Outside terms of the product. Combine like terms. 3. Multiply the Last two terms of each binomial.

F L F L F O I L Multiply using FOIL: (x + 3 ) ( x + 2) = _ x 2_ +2x_ _+3x_ _+6_ = x2 + 5x + 6 O I I O

Notice that the two inside terms are like terms that can be added together. This method is known as the FOIL method. It gets its name from the process:

Try these. 4x+ 5x

Evaluate for the given value(s) of the variable:

1. x2 + 4x - 5 for x = 2 2. 3x2 - 3x for x = -2 3. -2x2 - 4x + 5 for x = -3

4. x2 - 3xy + y2 for x = -1, y = 2 5. 2xy - x2 - 2y for x = -2, y = 3
