Algebra I Information Sheet
KEEP THIS SHEET IN YOUR NOTEBOOK AT ALL TIMES.
I. SUPPLIES You will need paper and writing utensils (checking pen and/or pencil) each day. A binder with dividers to keep you organized would be useful, but is NOT REQUIRED. Each student will be required to turn in 4 dry erase markers to be used almost daily in class.
II. NOTEBOOK A. It is suggested that you keep an organized notebook at all times. This will assist you in the following ways: 1. It will contain your NOTES to help you study for tests and quizzes; 2. It will contain your assignments, making them easy to find; and 3. It will contain your old quizzes and tests. B. A suggested way to organize a notebook. Suggested titles for each divider are as follows: 1. Notes and miscellaneous; 2. Assignments; and 3. Quizzes and tests.
III. DAILY ASSIGNMENTS/HOMEWORK (10% of your overall average) A. Any assignment given in class is to be worked on in class. If by chance you do not complete the assignment before class is dismissed, you will complete the work at home as homework. B. To receive credit for your assignment, you must complete and check the entire assignment. There is no partial credit and there is no point in doing an assignment without checking your work. C. Each assignment will count 20 points toward a weekly homework grade. If you miss an assignment during the week, your homework grade is an 80, if you miss two – 60, and so on. D. The first thing we do each day in class is go over homework. When the bell rings, have your checked assignment out and be ready to ask questions about it (have the problems you have questions about marked in some way). E. Work from absences will be accepted according to Klein ISD rules in your handbook. Make-up work not turned in on schedule will result in a zero. You will be given a make-up sheet showing missed work. F. You may access your textbook online at my.hrw.com. If you are away or have lost a worksheet, look on my web page. If you are absent, it is suggested that you go online and at least read over the notes and attempt the assignment before returning to class.
IV. QUIZZES (30% of your overall average) A. Quizzes may be given at any time; B. They count as part of your daily average; C. A failing quiz grade can be raised to the test grade or a maximum of a 70 by improving on the subsequent test; and D. You are responsible for setting up a make-up time if you miss a quiz.
V. TESTS (60% of your overall average) A. Tests will be given on Monday or Wednesday; B. Tests count as part of your major average; and C. Test corrections are always recommended. For students scoring below a 70, extra points can be earned (up to a 70) by correctly and completely reworking each missed or partially missed problem, getting the corrections and test signed by a guardian, and turning in the corrections on or before the day of the next test. VI. YOUR AVERAGE I put grades into GradeSpeed as soon as I grade the paper. All averages in ParentConnect should be current. If you see something that is incorrect on ParentConnect, let me know ASAP. I try to be accurate, but sometimes make errors when entering grades. Please do not wait until after progress reports or report cards have been distributed to inform me of an error.
VII. STAAR END OF COURSE EXAM (EOC) On Tuesday, May 6th you will be taking the STAAR Algebra I EOC (End of Course Exam). This is a part of your high school graduation requirements. We will be discussing this in much more detail as the year progresses. VIII. SEMESTER EXAM AND FINAL EXAM You will be taking an exam at the end of each semester. Each will count 16% of the semester average. It is NOT included in your six weeks’ average. I will prepare you for it by giving you a packet at the beginning of the six weeks. The packet will contain review questions to help prepare you for the test. The packet will count as a major grade for that grading period.
IX. EXTRA CREDIT A. You will have an opportunity to earn a five point bonus on most tests; B. You may get tests signed and returned the next school day to receive a “plus five”; C. Make-up work that is done in advance may earn a “plus five”. D. That’s it!
X. HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN ALGEBRA A. Participate in all discussions and class activities; B. Take adequate notes and study them (vocabulary, at least one example of each type of problem, etc); C. Do the “Try These” problems and “In Class Reviews” when available. They prepare you for homework, quizzes, and tests; D. Ask questions when necessary. Don’t wait until the day before of the day of a quiz or a test; E. Check homework answers in the back of the book or in “Answers to Stuff” and rework missed problems BEFORE the beginning of the next class; F. Keep up with daily assignment/homework, even when absent. Be sure to at least attempt each problem assigned; G. When preparing for tests, rework problems on assignments, quizzes, reviews, and tests. Find these problems (and their correct answers) and rework them to see if you get the correct answer. Your homework problems and reviews are the best guide to what will be on the test; and H. Get extra help from parents, guardians, friends, siblings, online, and/or me. I am available before and after school most days. In order to get extra help, sign the “Help” book, fill out a pass, then have me sign it. I will let you know at that time if I will be available to meet with you. If you get home and realize then that you need help, email me. I will let you know as soon as I see the email (usually that evening or by 7:30 am the following morning) if I will be available.
