AUTOMOTIVE 12 COURSE OUTLINE
Automotive 12 is an advanced course providing students with a general overview of today’s automobile, whether you choose to follow a related career in this field, or to expand your knowledge and skills for general interest.
This course is designed to prepare you for the future. It is designed to BUILD SKILLS, SELF -CONFIDENCE and the ABILITY AND DESIRE TO LEARN NEW INFORMATION. Although we will concentrate on the automobile, the knowledge and skills you acquire can be transferred to a wide range of mechanical situations.
COURSE CONTENT
The theory section will cover the following areas: 1. Basic over view of the automobile. 2. Ignition system. 3. Fuel Injection System. 4. Work procedure and shop safety. 5. Frame construction, jacking and hoisting. 6. Use of ALLDATA and related reference material. 7. Starting System. 8. Charging System. 9. Carburetors. 10. Electrical System. 11. Transmission. 12. Differentials. 13. Emissions and related components.
STUDENT ATTENDENCE
Automotive 12 has been designed as an experience course. Each day new material relevant to the students growing awareness of automobile and their maintenance will be covered. As the majority of the practical work and demonstrations in automobile maintenance utilize special tools and equipment not available to students outside of school, it is vital that the student attends on a regular basis. Absence from the class will have a negative effect on two out of three areas of evaluation: 1. Practical shop work and labs. 2. Participation and Time on task.
EVALUATION
There will be four areas of evaluation for each student. These areas are: 1. Shop work & Time-on-Task 15% 2. Theory 25% 3. Final Exam 15% 4. Video 05% 5. Labs 40%
1 PRACTICAL SHOP WORK AND LABS
There will be a verity of mechanical experiences open to automotive students. These mechanical experiences may be covered through work on actual cars or labs set up within the shop. The quality of the student’s shop work along with the number of shop jobs and labs completed will determine the student’s performance in this area.
WRITTEN TESTS
Written tests will be an indicator to the student of his or her performance in the theoretical part of the course. There will be a test at the end of each major part of the course. If you cannot write the test on specified test days, then arrangements must be made In Advance.
PARTICIPATION AND TIME ON TASK
In the evaluation of the student’s participation and time on task, the instructor will subjectively look for the following characters. Personal pride in a new skill learned and a job well done. Maintaining safe work habits at all times. The development of a desire and willingness to become involved in both routine and new and challenging work. The development of a desire to learn by using all the available resources including fellow, resource material, media and the instructor. The development of good work habits which includes care and maintenance of shop tools and equipment and proper clean up at the finish of each period. Students should come to class on time, ready to work, equipped with the necessary tools, be they coveralls, notebook or pen.
SHOP CLOTHING
Coveralls will be required by ALL students in automotive 11. No student will be permitted to participate in shop activities unless he or she is wearing coveralls and close toed shoes. It will sometimes be necessary to work out of doors, but under cover. It would be advisable for students to come to class equipped for this type of work. Warm socks shoes or boots, sweaters or jackets will make out of doors work more enjoyable. Do not wear expensive clothes or shoes in the shop area.
In the interest of safety students with long hair will be required to tie it back.
