[1093-2] 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A SENATE RESOLUTION 10 11 TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE LIFE OF ONE OF SOUTH 12 CAROLINA’S MOST DISTINGUISHED CITIZENS, THE 13 HONORABLE THOMAS BEE, TO CELEBRATE AND 14 ACKNOWLEDGE HIS SIGNIFICANT, PATRIOTIC 15 CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE SUCCESSFUL FORMATION OF 16 OUR STATE AND NATION, AND TO DECLARE JANUARY 17 14, 2012, “THOMAS BEE DAY” IN SOUTH CAROLINA. 18 19 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to 20 acknowledge the prolific and noteworthy accomplishments of 21 Thomas Bee, one of South Carolina’s most distinguished citizens, 22 and his role in influencing the beginning of our State and nation; 23 and 24 25 Whereas, in 1761, Thomas Bee’s fifty year career began when he 26 started his private law practice. He began public service to the 27 State as a representative to the South Carolina House of 28 Representatives and became the Speaker of the House, and also 29 served in the South Carolina Senate; and 30 31 Whereas, he served as the Stamp Act Commissioner and as a 32 member of the 1st and 2nd Provincial Congress and later to the 33 Continental Congress; and 34 35 Whereas, he was elected to serve as the Lieutenant Governor of the 36 State of South Carolina and served under Governor John Rutledge; 37 and 38 39 Whereas, serving his community as well, Thomas Bee was the 40 president of the Charleston Library Society and the Chairman of 41 the Founding Board of Trustees of the College of Charleston; and 42

[1093] 3 1 Whereas, with a passion for serving his nation, he was appointed a 2 federal judge by President George Washington and was also 3 nominated and confirmed to the Supreme Court of the United 4 States; and 5 6 Whereas, in the cemetery located on the historic 18th century 7 Woodstock Rice Plantation in Charleston County which he owned 8 during the Revolutionary War, five headstones stand as mute 9 sentinels to family members of the Bee/Bulline family, including 10 one marking the grave of Thomas Bee; and 11 12 Whereas, on January 14, 2012, Sumter’s Home Chapter of the 13 National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) 14 will mark this grave with the prestigious bronze DAR star to note 15 the patriotism and work of this founding father of our State and 16 nation; and 17 18 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are grateful 19 for the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution in 20 honoring Thomas Bee and are pleased to recognize his patriotic 21 life and momentous work by declaring Saturday, January 14, 2012, 22 as “Thomas Bee Day” in South Carolina. Now, therefore, 23 24 Be it resolved by the Senate: 25 26 That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, 27 recognize and honor the life of one of South Carolina’s most 28 distinguished citizens, the Honorable Thomas Bee, celebrate and 29 acknowledge his significant, patriotic contributions to the 30 successful formation of our State and nation, and declare January 31 14, 2012, “Thomas Bee Day” in South Carolina. 32 33 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 34 the Sumter’s Home Chapter of the National Society Daughters of 35 the American Revolution. 36 XX 37
