Rock Painting

Materials : Rocks, depending on time can have them pre-primed Acrylic paints- Red Blue Yellow Black and White at least Paintbrushes- Medium and fine Newspaper to cover tables Paper plates for palettes and to use as a work surface White paper to draw design on Pencils Water containers 2 Pitchers for brush cleaning water Acrylic vanish to coat finished rocks Permanent markers for outlining and personalizing Own example and books showing other examples

Introduction Discuss how we are going to do a painting project and our canvas is going to be the surface of a small rock. Show pictures and own examples. Discuss how they can choose a rock first and see if it suggests a subject to them or they can decide what they wish to paint and then choose a rock.

Demonstration Demonstrate the steps to complete the project

1. Prime the rock with several coats of white paint. Let each coat dry before applying another. The thinner the paint the faster each coat will dry. 2. Place rock on a white piece of paper and draw around it. Draw your design on the paper. 3. Transfer your design on to the surface of the rock. You can do this free hand or by rubbing pencil on the back of your drawing placing it on top of the rock and drawing over your design. 4. Paint your design and allow to dry completely. 5. Paint the background color on the top and sides of your rock. 6. When the rock is completely dry you may outline your design with permanent marker. 7. Write name, date, message etc. on the underside of the rock. 8. When rock is completely dry coat with an acrylic vanish to finish.

Activity

Let the teens cover the work tables and help distribute the supplies. Each person will need. A rock, a piece of white paper, a pencil and a paper plate to begin with. After each person has completed steps 1 through 3 they can collect a palette of paints, a paintbrush and water to share. Then they should paint their rock. If they make a mistake they can quickly wipe the paint off before it dries with a paper towel and then paint over it. Or wait until the paint has dried and then paint over it. While waiting for it to dry they may wish to start another rock. When the first rock is dry they can finish by outlining, signing and vanishing. When they have finished their rocks they should help clean up.
