RICHARD AND DOUG HARNED
Science in Focus (with Bells), 2015 2 cast iron hemispheres of the Earth (Northern and Southern Hemisphere), 4 mallets, 2 photo stands, 2 welded steel chandeliers, 12 lenses, 1 DVD, 1 DVD player, 50-inch monitor
Richard Harned (Columbus, Ohio) and Doug Harned (Cary, North Carolina) are brothers and frequent collaborators who create environmental sculptural installations incorporating often-humorous, post-modern warnings about technology’s impact on nature.
Science in Focus (with Bells) is related to their installation in the upper gallery via a selection of films about climate change from the American Geophysical Union 2014 Film Festival organized by Doug Harned. Flanking the video is a pair of lensed chandeliers and cast iron bells with a relief of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. If you believe in science, the artists request audience participation by tapping the rim of the globe- shaped bells.
