The January General Membership Meeting of the MidAmerica Contingency Planning Forum was held on Thursday, February 20, at National Weather Service, 12 Missouri Research Park Drive, St. Charles, MO, starting at 2:00 p.m.

MCPF President Shawnee McDonough welcomed all in attendance and thanked the National Weather Service for hosting the meeting.

A. Previous Meeting Minutes The January meeting minutes are available on the MCPF web site: www.mcpf.us

B. Program Updates The following upcoming meeting dates and topics are planned:

March 20 – Ameren Emergency Operation Center Tour at 1901 Chouteau Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63103 https://www.ameren.com/sites/aue/pages/home.aspx.

April 17 – Exercise Design One-Day Class 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM – Limited Capacity - at Charter Communications, 12405 Powerscourt, St. Louis, MO 63131. Attendees are required to take the FEMA Independent Study Course, IS-120A "An Introduction to Exercises” prior to the class date.

May 15 – TBD

June 19 – TBD

C. Treasurer’s Report The Treasurer’s Report was provided by Helena van Zanten. The group has a balance of $6,379.05 in the checking account.

D. Membership Report Members are encouraged to renew their membership via the MCPF website: www.mcpf.us. Enrollment is open for new members as well.

E. Upcoming Activities Upcoming activities that may be of interest to MCPF members include:

 SLU “Business Continuity after a Disaster” Panel Discussion: 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm, Thursday, March 6, 2014 – St. Louis University, Busch Student Center, Room 170-171. Doors open at 5:30 pm for beverages, appetizers & networking; Program begins at 6:00 pm.

 High Level Notes from the Discussion: o 122 offices around the USA (6 Regional offices) o Each office covers 125 miles o St. Louis office covers 40 counties o 6 offices in Missouri (Every office has 2 backup offices) o 23 Staff (10 meteorologists) 24x7x365 o Doppler Radar has improved weather forecasting o 24 hours is very accurate (7 days not so much) o Back up power for the Weather Office & the Radar (2 generators) o 99% of all data comes from NOAA o Biggest challenge: Budget (Do more with less) o Computer Weather Models are not perfect o Goal is to have a great 24-36 hour forecast o Storm spotters report data that can be accessed by all o 70% of tornado warnings are false o Norman, OK originates tornado warnings o Facebook & Twitter are used by NOAA-STL to share data o Satellite data is good if no clouds are present o “Ensample” forecasting uses an average of all computer models o Discussed various weather theories
