The city of Bucharest
Founded at the beginning of the 14th century as a merchant town, Bucharest has a rich historical heritage. Nowadays, Bucharest is the political and administrative centre of Romania, hosting the Presidency, the Parliament, the Government, the headquarters of the main political parties, numerous cultural and education institutions, banks, financial and commercial companies. Geographically, the city lays at 44°24'49" Northern latitude (like Beograd, Geneva, Bordeaux and Minneapolis) and 26°05'48" Eastern longitude (like Helsinki or Johannesburg). During the 1930's its "fin de siecle" architecture gave was designated as "Little Paris". Despite the massive reconstruction of the 1980s, Bucharest remains a friendly town, with cafes open on sidewalks in the summer, and with boats on its lakes and rivers. You will be pleased by the city's eclectic mixture of architecture, from Curtea Veche, the remains of Prince Vlad Tepes 15th century palace - he was the city's founder as well as the inspiration for "Dracula" - to Orthodox Churches, Second Empire mansions, and the massive 6,000 room Parliament House, the second largest building in the world after the Pentagon. Bucharest is also the largest centre of study and education in the country, with over 250,000 students.

The 15th July for the mobility starting on the spring semester The European Credit Transfer System The ECTS - European Credit Transfer System - was developed by the European Commission in order to provide common procedures to guarantee academic recognition of studies abroad. It provides a way of measuring and comparing learning achievements and transferring them from one institution to another. The ECTS system is based on the principle of mutual trust and confidence between the participating higher education institutions. The agreement between the home and host institutions establishing the programme of study to be taken (Learning Agreement), the use of credit units to indicate the student's workload (ECTS credits) and the use of a Transcript of Records, which shows the student's learning achievements in a way which is communally understood and easily transferable from one institution to another, are set out to reinforce the mutual trust and confidence. In ECTS, 60 credits represent one year of study (in terms of workload); normally, 30 credits are given for 6 months (a semester) and 20 credits for a 3-month term (a trimester). ECTS credits are also allocated to practical placements and to thesis preparation when these activities are part of the regular programme of study at both the home and the host institutions. ECTS credits are allocated to courses and are awarded to students who successfully complete those courses by passing the examinations or other assessments. Examination and assessment results are usually expressed in grades.
Academic schedule The courses are organized in 14 weeks-long semesters (with an average workload of 30 ECTS/semester and 60 ECTS/year). The academic year lasts for approximately 9 months and it starts on the 1st October: the winter semester lasts from October until the end of January, whilst the summer semester starts at mid-February and ends in early June. There are two regular exam sessions, one for the winter semester (in February) and a second one in June. There is also a reset session in June-July for the students that missed or failed exams during the regular session.
Language of instruction The official language of instruction is Romanian, but there are special programs, where all the subjects are taught in foreign languages: English or French.
Other information. The evaluation procedure and the structure of the final grade for each subject is published in the course outline and announced by the teacher during the first lecture/seminar. The assessment method is customary to each professor, so once you choose a series / group you should remain within the same formation. There are two major types of evaluation: written exam, oral exam (during the exams sessions) and colloquiums or controls. There is a continuous evaluation during the semester which may consist of tests during the seminars, research papers, case studies presentations etc. The continuous evaluation is part of the final grade and sometimes it is conditional for granting access to the final exam.
