Topic: The Assassination of President Kennedy

Essential Questions

How did the assassination of President John F. Kennedy impact the United States? How did the assassination of JFK impact the city of Miami?

Learning Goals

With the events surrounding the assassination of President JFK, students will understand the impact that John F. Kennedy had on America during his short term as president.

Overview

 Students will learn through the events of JFK’s assassination how and why he is considered a favorite among the American people.  Students will also learn how his assassination in Dallas on November 22, 1963, was a national tragedy, and made Kennedy into a legend.

Background information

John F. Kennedy -- the first president born in the 20th century, scion of a family who rose from obscurity to wealth, power and political prominence -- was a leader for a new generation. He was also the first and only Catholic chief executive, the youngest president to be elected, and the youngest to die in office. Much like Teddy Roosevelt, JFK projected an image of glamour, intellectualism, and physical vigor. Kennedy inspired an entire generation of young people with his idealism and his concept of public service. His assassination in Dallas on November 22, 1963, was a national tragedy, and made Kennedy into a legend.

Activity Sequence Introduction

1. Students will listen to JFK’s Inaugural Address, 1961. http://www.history.com/topics/us-presidents/john-f- kennedy/videos/jfk-a-new-generation?m=528e394da93ae&s=undefined&f=1&free=false 2. Students will then analyze JFK’s Inaugural address and answer the following question: a. Based on JFK’s speech, identify at least 3 goals he has as president? 3. Introduction of President John F. Kennedy during the 1960’s and the issues surrounding his assassination.

Activity

 Watch the video from NBC Miami news- “Miami Came to a Standstill As News of John F. Kennedy's Assassination Spread” http://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/Miami-Came-to-a-Standstill-As-News-of-John-F-Kennedys- Assassination-Spread-233100511.html  Students will complete the Kennedy Assassination K-W-L chart  Students will use the information from the K-W-L chart to write a one page summary explaining the following; o What they knew about the assassination of JFK prior to watching the news clip. o What they learned about the assassination of JFK after watching the news clip.

Closure (2 minutes)

 Based on the videos we have watched and what we have learned, what can you infer about the type of President John F. Kennedy was and what were the views of the American people towards him?
