Paper 1- Practical Element – Múineadh na Gaeilge. FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions;

Q. Will I be notified as to time of visit? A. Yes – you will receive notice of date and time of your visit from your supervisor.

Q. If I am doing Paper 1, can I leave out the Practical Element? A. No. The Practical Aspect is a compulsory part of Paper 1. It must be completed. Otherwise Paper 1 will be classified as Fail/Incomplete.

Q. Could I leave out the yearly scheme and just do the rest of the Practical? A. No. Each part of the Practical Element must be presented. Otherwise, you will be classified as Fail/Incomplete.

Q. If there are parts/elements/items missing from my file will it be alright to give/send them to the examiner on another day or to send them into the SCG Office? A. No. The Examiner can only accept the file presented on the day. Additional items cannot be accepted by the examiner after the visit has been completed. The SCG Office will only accept the file as returned by the Examiner and additional items cannot be included at a later date. N.B. Candidates are advised to ensure that a complete file is submitted to the examiner as an incomplete file will result in a classification of Fail/Incomplete for Paper 1.

Q. If I present everything for the Practical Aspect but I fail the Practical Aspect, do I fail Paper 1? A. Not necessarily. Because you have completed the Practical Aspect fully, your mark will be added to the mark you will get at the written Paper 1 Exam at Easter. It would still be possible to pass Paper 1 if your marks from Practical Element, combined with the written exam part of Paper 1, achieved the pass mark.

Q. What percentage of the marks for Paper 1 is the Practical Element? A. The Practical Element accounts for 15% of Paper 1.

Q. Will the Examiner tell me how I have done on the day of my visit? A. No. The Examiner is essentially there to examine and cannot give you your result on the day. The result of the practical aspect will appear on your exam results’ sheet which will issue with the results of the Easter exam.

Q. Can I appeal the result of the practical element? A. Yes you can appeal the result for Paper 1 and the Practical Element is a part of Paper 1. Information on the appeal process will issue with the exam results.

Q. I don’t have a class. Can I still undertake the Practical Element of Paper 1? A. It is a requirement that you undertake the Paper 1 Practical Element in a Primary classroom setting. If you are working in a Special Needs or Language Support capacity you will have to arrange with your School Principal to have access to a class. It is at your own discretion how much time prior to the visit you will need to spend with the class. We recommend that you allow enough time to become familiar with the class and to complete the Practical Element satisfactorily.

Q. I’m not teaching at present. Can I still do the Practical Element? A. Yes, but you will have to arrange access to a class with the permission of a Primary School Principal. Q. I am in a Resource/ Language Support Teaching position. Can I teach the lesson to the group that come to me for Resource/ Language Support intervention? A. No. The Practical Element of Paper 1 Múineadh na Gaeilge must be completed in a Primary School Class(es) setting.

Q. I am teaching in a Special School. Can I undertake the Practical Element in a Special School? A. Teachers teaching in a special School are dealt with in on a case by case basis. The key element of any decision is whether the requirements as outlined in ‘Cóir Ghaoithe’ can be satisfactorily complied with.

Q. Why do we have to submit the Comhad (File) containing the Yearly scheme, weekly scheme and the lesson to the Examiner. A. The Examiner will take the comhad back with his/her to Coláiste Mhuire Marino. In the event that you appeal the Paper 1 result, the Comhad and the Examiner’s notes will form the basis of the re-evaluation of the Practical Element.

Q. Where can I get the templates of the yearly scheme, weekly scheme and lesson layout? A. Templates are available for download form the Coláiste Mhuire, Marino/SCG website (www.ilrweb.ie). Click on ‘Scrúdú’ then ‘Gné Phraiticiúil’. Templates are available in 2 groups: Junior Infant to Rang 1 and Rang 2 to Rang 6. It is important to download the appropriate template for your class. A template of the file cover page is also available for download and must be used.

Q. If I fail Paper 1 and decide to repeat Paper 1 in the repeat exam in late August will I have to repeat the Practical Element of Paper 1? A. If you have passed the Practical Element you will have a choice of carrying that mark forward to the repeat examination or undertaking the Practical Element again. If you did not pass the Practical Element then you will have to repeat the Practical Element. Information will issue with the Easter examination results. Repeat of the Practical Element will take place in June.

Q. How long will the visit for the Practical Element – Paper 1 of Teaching in the Classroom last. A. The visit will last approximately between 35mins – 50 mins.
