FINAL EXAMINATION INTRODUCTION TO POLITICAL THEORY Instructor: S. Anderson TTH 10:25 ESSAY EXAMINATION: Answer all of the following questions - a total of FOUR answers (50 points each). Each answer must be typed double-spaced. Please follow the page limit on each question. DO NOT USE ANY QUOTES! All of your outside sources for each question must be published in 2017. 1. Can a radical Islamist system exist side by side with a system that has a democratic structure? Explain the key components of this philosophy using two specific thinkers from your reader. Answering the above question, create your own argument using only one outside source that illustrates and supports your argument. USE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES. LIMIT YOURSELF TO TWO PAGES. 2. Describe the conception of liberty or freedom found in each of the liberation ideologies. How can our American notion of “democracy” include a notion of equality? Pick one of the liberation ideologies to use as support using one specific outside source. You must also incorporate one editorial we have read that reflects a liberation ideal. USE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES. LIMIT YOURSELF TO TWO PAGES. 3. What are the main features of an environmental or ecological ethic? As an ecologist identify yourself as a liberal, socialist, or another identifiable group. Incorporate one thinker’s ideas that best reflects your identity. You have read two articles from the Nation Magazine: “The Future of Food” and "Elon Musk Will Not Lead Climate Leap," Naomi Klein and Avi Lewis. The Nation Magazine, 11/16/17” and watched the Documentary “Dirty Lying Bastards”. You must use these arguments in some way as your write your answer. Which conception of democracy is unlikely to thrive in the twenty-first century? Why? When explaining this conception incorporate one suggestion from "Fix This Democracy Now, 38 Ideas to Fix Democracy," The Washington Post, 11/7/17. Find one outside source that exhibits the application of this concept. Create your own theory of democracy and how it might look in the next decade. Defend it using one outside source.
