UPCC Minutes, 03.27.08 5 o COM 4460 -- Change in Course (Crisis Communication) o COM 4465 -- Change in Course (Public Relations Campaigns) o COM 4475 -- Discontinue Course (Decision Making and Problem Solving) o COM 4480 -- Change in Course (Seminar in Communication Theory) o COM 4485 -- New Course (Syllabus) (Media Studies Capstone) o COM 4488 -- New Course (Syllabus) (Multi-Media Visions of Community) o B.S. in Communication -- Change in Major (Current View) (Proposed View) (Missing Business Content) Chuck Aust explained that the Communications department has added a 4th concentration to the curriculum to include Journalism and Citizen Media. Many of the changes include changes in course numbers to better represent the rigorousness of the courses (COM 1129 & 1135) and prerequisite changes (COM 2205, 2230, & 3330). The proposal for COM 3333 was an error and should not have been placed on the agenda. Also, COM 4440 was mistakenly represented as COM 4400 on the agenda.
Suggestions were made to take off the course name and only include the course number for COM 3340. In addition a concern was noted that there needs to be a discussion with the College of the Arts in regards to the content of this course and potential overlap. Another suggestion was to include a semicolon in the prerequisite statement for COM 3345 so that it reads “COM 2205 and 60+ credit hours: or permission of instructor.”
A motion was made, seconded and passed by the committee (on voice vote) to approve the proposals as a package on first reading, with an understanding that suggested changes would be made
The remaining items on the agenda (from the Department of Political Science and International Affairs, the Department of Geography and Anthropology, the Department of Psychology, and the Department of Biology/Physics) were postponed until the next meeting because of time constraints.
A motion was made, seconded and passed by the committee to adjourn the meeting.
Respectfully submitted, Dan Niederjohn, proxy for Pam Marek Secretary
