SOC-320 Topic 5 Journal Entry

SOC-320 Topic 5 Journal Entry For each part of the Journal assignment, compose a response with a minimum of 250 words. These journal entries are designed to allow you to see how your own personal experiences or situations are relevant to the kinds of things that sociologists study. You will not be asked to share them with anyone other than the instructor of this class. It is hoped that this will allow you to be open and honest when controversial or personal topics are explored. APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected. Part I: Part I: Marriage and Family Journal (Entry #9) Think of a married couple with whom you are quite familiar. This could be your parents, some friends, or even your own marriage if you are married. Based on the information in Chapter 9 of the Lauer & Lauer text, analyze the communication skills of this couple. Would you classify their communication as “satisfying” (p. 206) or are there identifiable “impediments” (p. 202 ff.)?

Part II: Marriage and Family Journal (Entry #10) Think of a married couple with whom you are quite familiar. (This could be the same couple you used as your example in Journal Entry #9 or another couple with whom you are quite familiar.) With regard to the topic of power in a marriage, would you say that there are a lot of power struggles in this marriage or is power more or less equally shared? What types of power do you see in this marriage (see p. 219)? How might a Christian Worldview affect how a couple shares power within a marriage?

Part III: Marriage and Family Journal (Entry # 11) When you were growing up, did your mother work outside the home? If you are not married, does this influence your thinking about whether you will work outside the home if and when you are married? If you are currently married or have been married in the past and are a woman, do you or did you work outside the home? What do or did you think about this fact? Is/was the fact that you work or worked outside the home your preference or was it something that you and your husband thought was economically necessary?
