Diagnostic Error and Laboratory Strategies for Mitigating Risk Description: According to AHRQ, "Diagnostic error comprises a notable and costly fraction of all medical errors and has resulted in devastating consequences for patients, families, and health care professionals." In fact, missed and delayed diagnoses are one of the chief causes of malpractice claims in healthcare. In this session, we will describe diagnostic errors and the impact of the laboratory on the generation of diagnostic errors. More importantly, we will review interventions that can originate in the lab and reduce diagnostic errors by clinicians. Finally, we will develop strategies for laboratory leaders to become agents for change that improve patient outcomes. Learning Objectives: 1. Learn how to classify diagnostic errors according to established taxonomies. 2. Identify the role of the clinical laboratory in contributing to or preventing diagnostic errors. 3. Identify laboratory directed interventions that can reduce diagnostic errors and improve patient outcomes.
