COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course consists of 16 hours of classroom and in-the-water practice with water survival techniques and lifesaving equipment including life rafts and survival suits. Completers will receive a certificate- Personal Survival Techniques. A Modular Egress Training Simulator (METS) will be used to instruct the student of proper procedures to prepare and escape a helicopter ditching

PREREQUISITES: None

COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. To learn how to survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment as set forth in STCW Code Table A-V/1-1. 2. To learn survival techniques relative to emergency Situations, evacuation, survival craft and rescue boats, personal lifesaving appliances, survival at sea, emergency radio equipment, helicopter transportation, and preflight planning. 3. To prepare for ditching and escaping from a downed helicopter.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: All students are to complete courses as scheduled. Students will not be allowed to “make up” time in any course. Because of Coast Guard requirements concerning attendance, students who cannot complete a course within the scheduled timeframe, will be required to re-schedule to take the entire course.

EVALUATION AND GRADING: Evaluation of student’s performance demonstrations will be determined pass or fail by the instructor. Only those students that successfully complete the practical demonstrations will receive a completion certificate.

ACADEMIC HONESTY: Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited. In addition to other possible disciplinary sanctions, which may be imposed through the regular institutional procedures as a result of academic misconduct, your instructor will assign an “F” for the exercise or examination that evidences academic misconduct for the first offense and assign an “F” for the course for repeated offenses.
