Unit Sounds and Letters

Key Stage Targets To develop an ever-improving capability to use English - to converse about feelings, interests and experiences (I.D. b) - to develop an awareness of the basic sound patterns of English and an enjoyment of imaginative texts through activities such as reciting poems and rhymes, singing songs and presenting short simple plays (E.D. a) - to give expression to imaginative ideas through oral, written and performative means such as creating simple rhymes and poems with support from the teacher (E.D. c) - Programme Outline This special programme is one of the Phonics Series programmes that aims at arousing pupils’ interest in phonics. Nicky, an ordinary eight-year-old boy, wakes up one day to discover that his name has been changed into Micky. Apart from his name, he is surprised to find that his teacher’s name and his school’s name have also been changed. Feeling totally confused, he meets Dr Phonics whom he suspects to be the person who has played such tricks on him. Determined to find out what has happened, he follows Dr Phonics into his workshop.

In Dr Phonics’s workshop, Nicky realises why such tricks are played on him. Dr Phonics who is in charge of letters and sounds wants to teach him the importance of getting the sounds of the letters right. By teaching Nicky how to sound out some of the letters, Dr Phonics finally helps Nicky to get back his name.

Suggested Activities 1. Motivate the class by introducing to pupils the sounds of the letters of the alphabet. Teachers can start by teaching pupils the sounds of the consonants, such as b, d, t, s, f, j, k, etc. 2. Briefly introduce the story outline to the pupils. Ask pupils to note in the programme the changes made to Nicky’s name, his school’s name and his teacher’s name. 3. Teachers can ask pupils to sound out contrastive sounds in words like, Nicky and Micky, Plum and Glum and Bark and Park, etc. 4. For more practice in phonics, teachers can refer to the Phonics Series and the Phonics Multimedia Resource Pack.
