Welcome to Biotechnology! This is an upper level science class covering the principles and practices of Biotechnology. Students should have taken and passed, with a “B or better ”, Biology and Chemistry prior to enrolling in Biotechnology. Students will gain proficiency with lab protocols and lab procedures, as well as gain a deeper understanding of the principles of modern biotechnology.

Course Outline:  Sub-term I: Introduction to biotechnology; Biology review (biochemistry, cells, DNA structure/replication; protein structure/synthesis); Chemistry review (molarity, making solutions, concentrations) Techniques: Micropipeting, Gel electrophoresis (agarose gels), Growing bacteria (LB agar plates/ LB broth)

 Sub-term II: Amgen-Bruce Wallace Program and Coastal Marine Biolabs (DNA Barcoding Project) Techniques: DNA extraction, Bacterial transformation, Polymerase Chain Reaction, DNA sequencing

At the end of this course, students should have an understanding of the following:  Standard Lab Operating Procedure: Notebooks, Equipment and Practices

 DNA Science: Principles and Applications

 Experimental Design and the Utility of Common Techniques in Molecular Biology

RECOMMENDED MATERIALS 1) 3 ring binder with dividers We will use most of these 2) Covered “Biotechnology: Science for the New Millennium” textbook materials every day! 3) Pen, pencil (#2), highlighters, non-graphing calculator 4) Lined notebook paper 5) Colored pencils

CLASSWORK  LATE WORK: Only 4 assignments will be accepted late with “no penalty” throughout this entire course. YOU MAY USE ONE LATE PASS PER HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT WITH NO PENALTY AS LONG AS THE ASSIGNMENT IS TURNED IN THE NEXT SCHOOL DAY! HW assignments can be turned in for half credit when all 4 late passes have been used. Half credit late work will NOT be accepted after test day!  The pass is to be stamped when the late assignment is shown to the teacher.  Lost passes will not be replaced!!  Late passes CANNOT be used on Labs or Projects or Outlines.  Late passes will not be accepted for extra credit so use them!  CHEATING will result in a zero on the assignment, a written referral for academic dishonesty and an academic dishonesty contract (2 years). Cheating is defined as copying another student’s work (homework, classwork /lab work, answers on tests, quizzes, or projects) and copying work from other sources (the internet or reference books). This is a serious offense; take is seriously! Do not copy; do your own work!! (See Student Handbook for additional consequences and class agreement passed out on day 1)

TESTS and QUIZZES: Tests will be announced. Quizzes may be given at any time, either announced or unannounced.

NOTE: If a student was absent on the day of the exam or quiz, they will take the exam / quiz the day they return to school, no exceptions…be prepared!

Make up exams / quizzes will be given at a scheduled time established by teacher! It is your responsibility to talk to me! I will not find you to remind you that you need to make up a test/quiz!

GRADING Grading will be based on the following percentages:

93 -100% A 90-92 A-

83-89 B 80-82 B- Classwork/Homework 10% Tests/Quizzes 55% 73-79 C Labs / Projects 25% 70-72 C- (includes lab notebook) Final Exam/Project 10% 63-69 D 60-62 D- Note: Labs/Projects cannot be turned in late! 0- 59 % F *percentages subject to change per subterm.

ATTENDANCE &  ATTENDANCE. Attendance is mandatory! MAKE UP WORK For an extended illness, contact Mrs. Malone through the school or by e-mail to get work sent to the office for your family to pick up. ***Note: This type of request may take 1-2 days to process before the work is available in the office.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES. Full day truancy will result in loss of off campus pass. Truancy #1 detention /call home. Truancy #2-3 referral /Saturday school. Truancy #4 drop/fail from the class. Can you afford to be dropped!!!!

 MAKE-UP WORK. Attendance is very important! While missing class due to illness or other emergencies can occur, it is your responsibility to get any missed assignments and/or notes. “I didn’t know” or “I wasn’t here” are not acceptable excuses! Look on my website to view the daily agenda. It is YOUR responsibility to get all missed lecture notes from someone in class (NOT ME).

 MISSED LABS. Make-up days for labs will be after school only and given during the week of a presented lab! See me to make arrangements.

 TARDIES: You are considered tardy if you are not in your seat and ready to work when the bell rings (homework/stamp page out, working on warm-up in binder)

Offense #1: warning from teacher / call home #2: warning from teacher / call home #3: detention / call home #4-5 referral / call home by office #6 drop / fail from class
