133L Oscilloscope Lab Extra Credit There are two possible extra credit opportunities for this lab. You do not have to do both to receive extra credit for this lab. However, you do have to complete all components of the particular extra credit opportunity for that particular opportunity to be graded. Components may include taking and recording data, completing calculations and answering questions. Turn in the completed extra credit with your regular Oscilloscope Lab report.

Extra Credit 133L (5 pts possible) - Part 2: Transformer:

Voltage Measurement for Transformers With and Without Iron Core – Extra Credit Mean diameter of Mean diameter of large coil ( ) secondary coil ( ) Voltage In (volts) Number of blocks Vertical scale factor Voltage Out peak-to-peak (voltage/division) (volts) Without iron core With iron core

EC calculations – Transformer (Show work. Include units.)

 Ratio βwithout/βwith [= left side of equation 7] o Be sure to show how you got βwithout and βwith. Show your work/algebra/input values.  Ratio (area of small coil)/(area of large coil) [= right side of equation 7] o Be sure to show how you got the area of the small and large coils. Show your work/algebra/input values.

EC Question – Transformer: In part 2 (transformer), are the ratios on the left side and right side of equation 7 (133L) approximately equal? To answer this, consider the percent difference between the left and right sides of the equation. If the values are not reasonably close to each other (define your “reasonably close”), what things beyond your control might have affected your experiment?

Extra Credit 133L (5 pts possible) - Part 3: Phase Measurement:

Phase Measurement Using Lissajous Figures – Extra Credit Frequency Resistor resistance, Voltage A, Voltage B, Inductance, Measured f (Hz) R (Ohm) A (volts) B (volts) L (H) Inductance, L (H)

EC calculations - Lissajous figures (Show Work. Include units.)  Phase angle, φ. Use equation 5  Inductance of coil from the phase angle. Use equation 8.

EC Question – Phase: How does your inductance calculated from the phase angle compare to that measured by the instructor using the inductance bridge? Discuss what things beyond your control might have affected your experiment and its result.
