About the Institute We are a charity with an extensive worldwide membership (currently about 45,500). An elected Council of up to 25 trustees meets three times a year to govern and control the Institute’s affairs. We are a leading communicator of physics with all audiences from specialists, through government to the general public. Our publishing company, IOP Publishing is a world leader in scientific publishing and the electronic dissemination of physics.

Encouraging young people to study physics is a priority. We provide help and support to teachers particularly by providing resources, advice and training. To encourage young people to study physics beyond the age of 16 we have developed initiatives including our own A-level course and bursaries for undergraduate study.

Our diverse membership ranges from university students through qualified professionals employed in all sectors of the economy to the retired community. Members are supported by regional, scientific and professional networks; a range of informative websites; careers advice and continuous professional development programmes; and the granting of Chartered Status. Members are kept in touch through an extensive conference programme and internationally acclaimed journals, magazines and websites, including our magazine Physics World and newspaper Interactions.

Physics furthers scientific knowledge and provides economic and social benefits. Our member networks enable us to provide information about issues that affect higher education and research policy, particularly by maintaining close relationships with government departments and funding agencies and responding to consultations.

The Institute works in collaboration with national physical societies, sharing information and working jointly to promote the interests of physics, and makes its educational materials, policy statements and other services available internationally. We play an important role in societies such as the European Physical Society and represent British and Irish physicists in international organisations.

Communicating the benefits of science to a variety of audiences is one of our strategic goals. Activities range from the publication of leading research journals to popular programmes promoting physics in society. We produce a range of publications and electronic communications including an extensive website to promote the Institute and physics. The Institute works with both specialist and general media to bring physics to as wide a range of audiences as possible.
