Michael J. Tona Dr. Cone Tech & Assess 14 November 2016 Assessment Project and Instrument Problem
1. Many athletes in today’s era suffer from many different injuries. One of these injuries has been pulled hamstrings. These athletes mainly range from high school level to even the professional level. Specifically, my assessment will be targeting soccer players as well as baseball/softball and football players. The purpose of this assessment will be to determine why these injuries are happening and to measure the strength and flexibility of these athletes. Refining the Problem
2. The population for which my rating scale is designed is aimed at 15-35 year olds anywhere from the high school to the professional level. It will be based off multiple sports, including soccer, baseball, softball, and football. During this test, both males and females will be used.
3. The purpose of my rating scale will be able to compare the differences pretest and post- test. The goal of this assessment is to find the reason why these athletes get injured and to help them learn how to fix the issue. The pretest will provide initial results, such as flexibility and strength. Throughout the program, we will continue to use this scale to be able to keep up with the clients’ rehabilitation process. It will help determine whether or not the process is beneficial.
4. The components and characteristics that I will be focusing on is flexibility, strength, range of motion, pain level, and stamina. Along with that, I will be using some of the components for both legs to compare the difference. The reason for this is to determine if there is a correlation between the dominant and less dominant leg. Along with that, I will use flexibility, stamina, and range of motion to see if the athletes are agile and can move well. This is essential for players in a competitive sport. Lastly, I will use strength and pain tolerance pretest and post-test to determine if the rehabilitation process is moving smoothly. Instrument and Methodology
5. For my assessment, the rating scale being used will be based off of the components of the project. To see if the client has passed the rehabilitation process, both a pretest and post- test will be used. This will be a number scale, ranging from 1-10. These numbers will represent the levels of theses components, with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest. The areas the scales will be focusing of are the flexibility, strength, range of motion, and pain levels of both legs. Along with that, the client will also have their stamina tested in the post-test.
6. The test administrator will need to know the use of the equipment, such as a treadmill and the strength machines being used. In addition to that, they will need to have background knowledge on fitness testing and range of motion tests. With this knowledge, they will be able to perform the range of motion assessments with ease. The test administrator should also have some sports knowledge on injuries to be able to give a proper assessment based off the rating scale. Lastly, they will need to use their judgement between a healthy athlete and an injured athlete. Analysis of Results
7. The results of my assessment will determine whether or not the athlete is returnable to play the sport. In order to pass the test and be cleared to return to play, the athlete will need to show significant results from their pulled hamstring. An improvement in stamina and strength is key within this test. Along with that, the main components the athlete will need to show is a reduced pain level and increased flexibility. Increasing their flexibility is a substantial component of this test because is prevents future injuries from happening. Pulled hamstrings are soft tissue injuries and can linger for a long time, so it is necessary to focus on the rehabilitation of this injury. Coming back too early from a sport with an injury like this can definitely happen again in the future. If the athlete is not improving within a couple months, I would recommend them to see a doctor to determine if the muscle was ton fully or not. Overall, this evaluation will be summative and will need the answers of the test to be added up. The test administrator will be the one to determine if the athlete can return to play or not based off of the numbers received from the test. The athlete should only be able to return back to the sport if their average post test numbers comes out to a grade of 7 or higher. Along with this, the test administrator will also have the option to pass a player based on their views.
