Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein There is a place where the sidewalk ends And before the street begins, And there the grass grows soft and white, And there the sun burns crimson bright, And there the moon-bird rests from his flight To cool in the peppermint wind.

Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black And the dark street winds and bends. Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow,

And watch where the chalk-white arrows go To the place where the sidewalk ends.

Yes we'll walk with a walk that is measured and slow, And we'll go where the chalk-white arrows go, For the children, they mark, and the children, they know The place where the sidewalk ends.

The Toucan by Shel Silverstein Tell me who can Catch a toucan? Lou can.

Just how few can Ride the toucan? Two can.

What kind of goo can Stick you to the toucan? Glue can.

Who can write some More about the toucan? You can! One Inch Tall by Shel Silverstein If you were only one inch tall, you'd ride a worm to school. The teardrop of a crying ant would be your swimming pool. A crumb of cake would be a feast And last you seven days at least, A flea would be a frightening beast If you were one inch tall.

If you were only one inch tall, you'd walk beneath the door, And it would take about a month to get down to the store.

A bit of fluff would be your bed, You'd swing upon a spider's thread, And wear a thimble on your head If you were one inch tall.

You'd surf across the kitchen sink upon a stick of gum. You couldn't hug your mama, you'd just have to hug her thumb. You'd run from people's feet in fright, To move a pen would take all night, (This poem took fourteen years to write-- 'Cause I'm just one inch tall).

Rain by Shel Silverstein I opened my eyes And looked up at the rain, And it dripped in my head And flowed into my brain,

And all that I hear as I lie in my bed Is the slishity-slosh of the rain in my head.

I step very softly, I walk very slow, I can't do a handstand-- I might overflow,

So pardon the wild crazy thing I just said-- I'm just not the same since there's rain in my head.

Forgotten Language by Shel Silverstein Once I spoke the language of the flowers, Once I understood each word the caterpillar said,

Once I smiled in secret at the gossip of the starlings, And shared a conversation with the housefly in my bed.

Once I heard and answered all the questions of the crickets, And joined the crying of each falling dying flake of snow,

Once I spoke the language of the flowers. . . . How did it go? How did it go?

Last Night I Dreamed of Chickens

Last night I dreamed of chickens, there were chickens everywhere, they were standing on my stomach, they were nesting in my hair,

they were pecking at my pillow, they were hopping on my head, they were ruffling up their feathers as they raced about my bed.

They were on the chairs and tables, they were on the chandeliers, they were roosting in the corners, they were clucking in my ears,

there were chickens, chickens, chickens for as far as I could see... when I woke today, I noticed there were eggs on top of me. Dora Diller

"My stomach's full of butterflies!" lamented Dora Diller. Her mother sighed. "That's no surprise, you ate a caterpillar!"

Noisy Noisy

by Jack Prelutsky

It's noisy, noisy overhead, the birds are winging south, and every bird is opening a noisy, noisy mouth.

They fill the air with loud complaint, they honk and quack and squawk— they do not feel like flying, but it's much too far to walk.

FALL Leaves

by Elise Bradly

How silently they tumble down And come to rest upon the ground To lay a carpet, rich and rare, Beneath the trees without a care,

Content to sleep, their work well done, Colors gleaming in the sun.

At other times, they wildly fly Until they nearly reach the sky. Twisting, turning through the air

Till all the trees stand stark and bare. Exhausted, drop to earth below To wait, like children, for the snow.

Pumpkin poem

One day I found two pumpkin seeds. I planted one and pulled the weeds. It sprouted roots and a big, long vine. A pumpkin grew; I called it mine.

The pumpkin was quite round and fat. (I really am quite proud of that.)

But there is something I'll admit That has me worried just a bit.

I ate the other seed, you see. Now will it grow inside of me? (I'm so relieved since I have found That pumpkins only grow in the ground!)

Baby Power Being born was great for me, Though I can’t recall the chore.

But every year I’m pleased to see, That it’s me they all adore.

My mom and dad stay close to me; They claim to know me well. They’re proud to know a celebrity, And me, I know they’re swell. They celebrate, they laugh and sing, And gifts on me they shower. I must have done a wondrous thing, My birthday cries, BABY POWER! By Karl Fuchs

But Why? On this day you blow the candles out; On this day the gifts pile high;

For one day a year you’re the special kid; "This is really great," you sigh.

"One birthday a year is really fun; I want two! I can’t? But why?" By Karl Fuchs Friendship Poems

My Everything Friend You magnify my happiness When I am feeling glad;

You help to heal my injured heart Whenever I am sad.

You’re such a pleasure in my life; I hope that you can see

How meaningful your friendship is; You’re a total joy to me. By Joanna Fuchs

Friendship Joy You are a shelter From life’s frequent storm; Like a comfortable blanket; You keep me snug, safe and warm.

You’re a light in the window When everything’s dark; You’re a trip to the circus, A picnic in the park. Like a bright, sunny summer, You are joy without end;

And I’m so very privileged To call you my friend. By Joanna Fuchs

We Are Friends Whether the day is good or bad, Whether I feel happy or sad,

If I have a need, you’ll comprehend; You’ll be there to share and be a friend.

Other people may fill my day, But never in such an important way;

We support each other ‘round all life’s bends, It feels so good that we are friends. By Karl Fuchs

Pure Delight It's such a pleasure and a joy To have a friend like you. You always care, you're always there, You say the right things, too!

Because you mean so much to me, More than I can express! By Joanna Fuchs

My Giving Friend We share so much of our lives Our joy and also our pain. Without you as my friend, I just might go insane! You know what I’m talking about; You’ve been through big things, too. Yet you cheer me when I’m happy, You comfort me when I’m blue.

Your giving does not go unnoticed; I’d be lost without you, friend. What we have together No one else can comprehend. By Joanna Fuchs

WINTER Snow

Snow is falling A beautiful sight Snow is falling It plays with the light

Snow is falling It plays it's game Snow is falling It makes all that's different look the same

Snow is falling It blinds all who see Snow is falling It hides you from me

A Snowy Sunset

Snow Snow on the ground Sun is sinking down down down Trees trees covered in Wight People gasp at the sight

Snow Snow on the ground Animals scurry all around Snow Snow in your hair Stiffness and cold in the air

February Twilight by Sara Teasdale

I stood beside a hill Smooth with new-laid snow,

A single star looked out From the cold evening glow.

There was no other creature That saw what I could see -- I stood and watched the evening star

The First Snow by Evaleen Stein

The snow! the snow! Whoop! Hooray! Ho! Ho! Plunge in the deep drifts and toss it up so!

Rollick and roll in the feathery fleece Plucked out of the breasts of the marvelous geese By the little old woman who lives in the sky; Have ever you seen her? No, neither have I!

Snowflakes by Linda A. Copp

Snowflakes spill from heaven's hand Lovely and chaste like smooth white sand. .

Graceful beauty raining down Giving magic to the lifeless ground.

Each snowflake like a falling star Smiling beauty that's spun afar. Till earth is dressed in a robe of white Unspoken poem the hush of night.

Thaw by Eunice Tietjens

The snow is soft, and how it squashes! "Galumph, galumph!" go my galoshes.

Spring Singing

by Robert Louis Stevenson

Of speckled eggs the birdie sings

And nests among the trees; The sailor sings of ropes and things In ships upon the seas.

The children sing in far Japan, The children sing in Spain; The organ with the organ man Is singing in the rain

Rain

by Robert Louis Stevenson

The rain is falling all around, It falls on field and tree,

It rains on the umbrellas here,

And on the ships at sea.

The Swing

by Robert Louis Stevenson

How do you like to go up in a swing, Up in the air so blue? Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing Ever a child can do!

Up in the air and over the wall, Till I can see so wide, River and trees and cattle and all Over the countryside--

Till I look down on the garden green, Down on the roof so brown-- Up in the air I go flying again, Up in the air and down!
