Introductory Homework Honors Biology

Answer the following questions on a separate sheet of paper. Your answers must be in complete sentences and preferably typed. I will accept neat handwritten assignments if you do not have a computer at home.

1. List the seven characteristics of life, and briefly describe them.

2. Differentiate between the following terms:

a. Prokaryotic, eukaryotic

b. Sexual reproduction, asexual reproduction

c. Heterotrophic, autotrophic

d. chemosynthetic, photosynthetic

3. Biology is an amazing science with a great history. Truly remarkable people have labored for years to discover the cause of a disease, the treatment for an illness, or how living things function. Choose one scientist from the list below. Do some rudimentary research and write a short paragraph about who he or she was, one important biological discovery they made, and why that discovery was important.

This paragraph should be about half a page word-processed or a full page handwritten. Spelling and grammar count.

Hans Krebs Gregor Mendel James Watson Mary Leaky Kary Mullis Lynn Margulis Barbara McClintock Melvin Calvin Charles Anton van Leeuwenhoek Darwin Linus Pauling (biology! Not his chemistry work!) Louis Pasteur Carolus Linneus Charles Drew John Dalton

A note on using outside research in your schoolwork:

Often it will be necessary to use the internet or other resources to look up answers to homework and lab work. When you use outside sources, never copy and paste directly from the website into your paper. Instead, it is best to pull a few important words or phrases from the source, and then write it into a paragraph using your own words. Always remember to cite the source.
