I am excited about the future for the Guild and we are in the process of planning activities and setting goals for 2005. As I mentioned at the December meeting our focus for 2005 will be on education, growth, and structure, but first and foremost it will be on having fun while we pursue our passion for woodworking. A few items that we will be pursuing include: scheduling one or two Marc Adams type seminars, developing an Internet web site, and developing a program to bring in new members.
As we enter into this new year I am reminded that the Guild and its course is not about any one person, but rather about a group of people who Map to Sharpening Specialists share a common passion for woodworking. Let us not forget that it is our Guild and it is what we Time: 6:30 to 7:00 social time make of it. With this in mind I encourage every Meeting starts at 7:00 pm member to get involved and help make this year and the Guild the best it can be. Drill Press Measurements
Owning a drill press will make you popular in your neighborhood. Seems like a simple tool, but it sure is valuable. It will be even more valuable if you know what “run-out’ is. It the amount that the center wiggles away from the “true center” This is often quoted in tool reviews. Run-out in a router, means that one side router bit is doing most of the cutting. Excessive run-out means more vibration, and for drill press, less accuracy. So, how do you measure run-out? See the drawing below. Setup for checking run-out
Tighten ground drill rod into the chuck and secure a dial indicator to the drill press table. Slowly rotate the spindle by hand and note the readings. How about checking for squareness?
