Second Six Weeks Syllabus (Updated Version) AP English Language and Composition Ms. Sample and Ms. Downing

Six Weeks Objectives: 1. recognize and analyze the effects of rhetorical devices 2. strengthen ability to write cogent rhetorical analyses 3. demonstrate understanding of plagiarism and its consequences 4. utilize thesis writing techniques to frame and develop an analytical essay outside of class, observing MLA requirements 5. increase grammar proficiency, especially in the areas of clauses, punctuation, and capitalization 6. learn meanings and usage of 25 AP level vocabulary words 7. understand how an author uses literary devices to develop plot, characterization, symbolism, etc.

T 10/5 Sample’s class: Practice scoring student examples from AHS students. Downing’s class: Visual Text—Death Penalty Satire and Capote Videos.

W/Th 10/6-10/7 Go over scoring answers from AHS student examples. Rhetorical Analysis Timed Writing #3 Reading check on Chapters 1 – 7 *Read all of Chapter 7* Monday, 10/18 Reading check on Chapters 8 – 15 Monday, 10/25 HW: “The New Community” Amitia Etzioni LOC pages 289-294, answer questions 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 9 on page 295.

W/Th 10/13 – 14 Sample’s Class: Visual Text-Death Penalty Satire Discuss elements of “Notes of a Native Son" PSAT/ASVAB – Note adjusted class days and times.

F 10/15 Finish discussion “Notes of a Native Son”. Discuss elements of "The Red Candle".

M 10/18 Reading check test #1 – Song of Solomon (Time Limit 25 minutes)– Discussion/notes Finish Discussion on “The Red Candle”.

T 10/19 Song of Solomon Discussion W/Th 10/20 – 21 Quiz on “Notes of a Native Son,” "The New Community," "The Red Candle” (Analysis level questions that will reflect class discussion). (Time limit 25 minutes) Return Rhetorical Analysis Timed Writing #3 Go over student range finders, discuss common weaknesses and strengths.

T 11/2 Vocabulary quiz (Last two sections of the tone words) Complete discussion over “Sweat”.

W/Th 11/3 – 4 2nd 6 Weeks exam.

F 11/5 Score College Board Range finders for Rhetorical Analysis Timed Writing #4 (Essays will be returned Monday)

Students are responsible for every assignment on the syllabus, whether they are reminded in class or not. Missed quizzes and tests will be made up on the day of return during class time unless otherwise discussed and planned with the teacher. Students are responsible for scheduling time after school to make up a timed writing within 2 days of an absence. AP/Dual Credit English does not provide opportunities for re-testing. Late work will be accepted 1 day late for a maximum grade of 75; 2 days late for a maximum grade of 60; 3 days late for a maximum grade of 50. No work will be accepted for credit after three days. Students are expected to follow their grades using Home Access Support and communicate any concerns to their parents. Likewise, students should see the teacher regarding any questions or concerns.

Check AP English Language and Composition web page for the following extra credit opportunities, syllabi, and miscellaneous handouts. The extra credit work for this six weeks is The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. Students are responsible for acquiring a copy of the work.
