[950-1] 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 10 11 TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF 12 TRANSPORTATION NAME THE INTERSECTION LOCATED 13 AT THE JUNCTION OF SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY 162 14 AND SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY 165 IN CHARLESTON 15 COUNTY "CHARLESTON COUNTY POLICEMAN STEVEN 16 BUIST HIOTT, JR. MEMORIAL HIGHWAY" AND ERECT 17 APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS ALONG THIS 18 PORTION OF HIGHWAY THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS 19 "CHARLESTON COUNTY POLICEMAN STEVEN BUIST 20 HIOTT, JR. MEMORIAL HIGHWAY". 21 22 Whereas, in all generations, it behooves an ordered, peaceful 23 society to demonstrate appreciation to those men and women who 24 make possible the safety and security of its citizens; and 25 26 Whereas, the people of the great State of South Carolina are 27 singularly blessed with military servicemen, police officers, 28 firefighters, and rescue personnel, who serve selflessly, often 29 putting their lives in danger in the delivery of that service; and 30 31 Whereas, Patrolman Steven Buist Hiott, Jr. of the Charleston 32 County Police Department stands high among those men and 33 women who have labored to ensure the safety and security of the 34 Palmetto State and who, therefore, retains a place of honor in the 35 hearts of its citizens; and 36 37 Whereas, as an officer with the Charleston County Police 38 Department, Steven Buist Hiott, Jr. was patrolling the Hollywood 39 Community near South Carolina Highway 165 in Charleston 40 County on Friday, October 29, 1982; and 41

[950] 2 1 Whereas, on that date, at the age of thirty-one, the Charleston 2 native became the fifth of many brave members of the Charleston 3 County Police Department to give his life in the line of duty; and 4 5 Whereas, Patrolman Hiott was investigating a recent larceny; and 6 7 Whereas, Patrolman Hiott was shot and killed while struggling 8 with the suspect; and 9 10 Whereas, Patrolman Hiott had served as a Charleston County 11 Police Department Officer since 1975; and 12 13 Whereas, there is no greater or more courageous sacrifice a man 14 can make than to lay down his life for a noble cause, as did Steven 15 Buist Hiott, Jr.; and 16 17 Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly counts it a great 18 privilege to remember Patrolman Steven Buist Hiott, Jr., one of the 19 Palmetto State’s finest, and its members with one voice offer their 20 grateful thanks to Almighty God for the service and ultimate 21 sacrifice of this valiant son of South Carolina; and 22 23 Whereas, it would be fitting and proper to recognize Patrolman 24 Steven Buist Hiott, Jr.’s legacy by naming a portion of South 25 Carolina Highway 165 in the Hollywood community in his 26 memory. Now, therefore, 27 28 Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives 29 concurring: 30 31 That the members of the General Assembly request that the 32 Department of Transportation name the portion of South Carolina 33 Highway 165 in Charleston County from its intersection with U.S. 34 Highway 17 to its terminus at the Wadmalaw River “Charleston 35 County Policeman Steven Buist Hiott, Jr. Memorial Highway” and 36 erect appropriate markers or signs along this portion of highway 37 that contain the words “Charleston County Policeman Steven Buist 38 Hiott, Jr. Memorial Highway”. 39 40 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 41 the Department of Transportation and to the family of Steven Buist 42 Hiott, Jr. 43 XX
