Executive Branch

The Executive Branch is made up of the President, Vice President and Cabinet Members (advisors). The Cabinet includes members like the Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense. The President is responsible for carrying out and enforcing the laws written by Congress.

The President can serve a maximum of two 4-year terms. There are some requirements to become President of the United States. First, you must be born in the United States, lived in the United States for at least 14 years, and be at least 35 years old. If something were to happen where the President can no longer serve, the Vice President would assume the role of President. The Cabinet and other federal agencies are responsible for the day-to-day enforcement of federal laws.

The President has the power to make treaties (agreements) with other countries. The President also serves as the Commander in Chief (Head of the Military). When it comes to making laws, the President has the power to sign bills into laws. If the President does not like a law that was passed by Congress, he/she has the power to veto or block that bill. The bill can still become a law if 2/3’s of Congress votes to overturn the President’s veto. The President also holds the power to appoint (select) the heads of the federal agencies and judges on the Supreme Court.
