Dear Second Grade Parents

October 11, 2016

Dear Second Grade Parents,

In this homework packet, your child will complete the following assignments this week:

1. Daily Prayers – Please practice praying the following prayers with your child daily. This a wonderful way for you and your child grow spiritually closer, especially as we prepare them for the Sacraments during second grade:

 The Lord’s Prayer - Our Father  Hail Mary  Glory Be to the Father  Prayer to my Guardian Angel (prayer in the morning and before bedtime)  Grace before Meals (prayer before eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner)

I will be testing the students to see if they know these prayers by heart this quarter. Soon, they will also practice the Act of Contrition in order to prepare for their First Reconciliation.

2. Phonics – Short and Long vowels: 2 sheets!

3. Spelling – Review of Lessons 1-5, Unit Review: 2 sheets!

4. Daily Reading Log - Your child is to read for at least 20 minutes every night and write a response to go with it (a Raz-plus book counts).

5. Raz-plus! Read at least 1 book here. Please make sure your child reads the books at their assigned level.

6. Spelling test on Friday - Study daily as there are many words this week!

More notes about homework:

 Your child will receive one Math assignment per day. Please check their homework folder daily. All assignments will also be posted online: http://www.stfinnbarr.org/apps/classes/766699/assignments/

 All assignments are due this Friday, October 14th. Please staple all of your child’s assignments together and make sure your child’s name and number is on the front page.

 Please help your child to finish all homework assignments. In doing so, your child continually builds discipline and responsibility. If students do not complete their homework, they will meet with Ms. Blanch during recess. I have been in touch with some of you regarding necessary modifications for your child’s success.

1  Regarding Raz-plus, please make sure your child is reading the books at their assigned level. I have viewed each child’s reading progress on Raz-plus. I have bumped every student up at least one level, according to our last Star Reading assessment. Some students have bumped up a few levels, which will really help them to grow in their reading skills. Again, your child is to read at the level that has been assigned to them. Reading at a level for Kindergarten will not challenge your child to become a better reader. If your child finds their assigned level to be far too difficult (i.e. cannot read most of the words, struggling with comprehension, reads word by word in a monotone voice), please contact me.

 Regarding Friday spelling tests, please make sure to help your child study. Congratulations to those who received 100% on their Spelling tests last week!

Second grade news:

 In a manila envelope, some of you have received your child’s work from this first quarter of school. If you have not yet received this, you will receive it this week. Please review your child’s work and discuss their strengths as well as areas for improvement (i.e. legible writing, slowing down, asking for help, finishing their work during class, following directions). Then, please sign the envelope and return it to school with your child.

 Thank you for attending our initial First Communion meeting last week. Your children are really excited to take part in the Sacrament of the Eucharist on April 30th! I encourage you to attend mass together as a family to develop an even greater awareness, love and joy in your child about receiving Jesus into their hearts during this special year.

Please email me at [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you and here’s to a wonderful week ahead!

With joy, Ms. Blanch
